A Look at The Merits Pioneer 10 scooter

Stability, functionality, and comfort are key ingredients in the design and development of a quality built mobility device. The Pioneer 10 is a mobility device from Merits, a trusted mobility company and it has been designed to embrace all of these essential concepts. First, stability comes in the form of the classic, 4 wheel configuration of the device. A 4-wheel format ensures tipping is unlikely and the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter takes a step further as it has anti-tip wheels at the rear of the device. Functionality is the second ingredient and you will find this stressed all over the device. The Pioneer 10 is designed to be simple to pilot on virtually any terrain. A Convenient LCD display ensures the driver always knows how much power they have and all buttons are designed to be easy to reach with the ergonomically designed tiller. Finally, we look at comfort. Comfort is found at every turn onboard the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter. Support for up to 500 pounds is dedicated by the swivel captain’s chair on the device. Not only does the chair swivel side to side, but actually rotates 360 degrees for optimal convenience and comfort. Furthermore, the adjustable tiller allows the driver to find the perfect angle for the most comfortable driving experience. Nothing has been overlooked as far as comfort in the design of the Pioneer 10.

Confident Safety Features

Safety is always important when traveling on your mobility device and the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter has been inundated with various safety features to ensure every excursion is a pleasant one. Like many other full size mobility devices, it features a full lighting package. The bright headlight lights the way when it is dark and blinkers and hazard lights allow passers by to see the device with ease. The horn is designed to be loud and always easy to access from two different points on the tiller. The Pioneer 10 maintains another safety feature that many may not fully understand. The electromagnetic braking system helps to keep the device at a slow pace while traveling down hill, but in the event of a loss of power, the braking system can be turned off to allow the Pioneer 10 to roll freely. If you ever lose power due to a dead battery, this feature makes it much easier to push the device where you need it to be.

Solid Construction

When a mobility device claims its weight capacity is 500lbs, they had better be able to back up those claims with heavy duty construction. The Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is not just an average mobility device, but one that is committed to a heavy duty format. The build on this unit features solid steel construction without weld joints. This ensures weak points are kept to a minimum allowing the device to hold its full weight capacity without fail. Additionally, the dual suspension system allows the Pioneer 10 to effortlessly glide over various terrains without negatively impacting the driver’s overall comfort level. No matter if you are taking the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter on a shopping trip indoors or using its full 32 mile power range on an extended journey outdoors, this device can do it all with ease.

What Type of Power Does the Pioneer 10 Have?

Power is important and you cannot possibly talk about an extended range without mentioning the Pioneer 10’s capable motor and battery system. Onboard the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter, a high end 24V DC  400W motor and 12V U1 batteries allow optimal range and capabilities. This configuration provides the Pioneer 10 with a speed rating of up to 6mph and the 6A off-board charger plugs in to any standard house outlet for easy charging.

How fast does the Merits Pioneer 10 go?

At full speed, you can reach 6 mph top speed.

If a faster top speed is important to you, please check out our collection of recreational mobility scooters, pre-selected for faster speeds.

How long do the Merits Pioneer 10 batteries last per charge? How many years of use can I get out of the batteries?

Battery running time per charge is measured in miles as opposed to time i.e. how many miles can a fully charged set of batteries take the scooter?

The answer depends on the user’s weight as well as the kind of terrain the scooter is operated upon.

Please take these manufacturer figures with a grain of salt, bearing in mind manufacturers may test their scooters in optimum conditions you won’t find in real life.

For a Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter, the batteries last: 32 miles.

The lifetime of your Merits Pioneer 10 batteries is approximately 2 years, but very much depends on how much you use your scooter and whether you take good care of your batteries.

The cost of replacing a set of Merits Pioneer 10 batteries is approximately $429

What kind of batteries are used in the Merits Pioneer 10?

This mobility scooter uses sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries. These batteries are maintenance free, meaning you don’t need to add water to them or anything like that.

They happily stay under their shroud for the duration of their lifetime and you shouldn’t need to do anything to them at all.

Lithium-ion batteries are not used, primarily due to cost. With batteries expiring after 2-3 years, the cost of replacing lithium batteries for a machine this size would run into several thousand dollars, vs. gel-cell which is more around the $500 mark.

Will the Merits Pioneer 10 seat fit me?

This scooter’s seat width is 22”.

This is a great seat size for most people and is more generous than most standard/travel mobility scooters.

If in doubt, we recommend measuring a chair in your house that you're comfortable on, to compare sizes.

How much weight can the Merits Pioneer 10 carry?

The weight capacity of the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is 500 lbs.

What kind of ground clearance does the Merits Pioneer 10 have? Is it good for paths and trails?

The Merits Pioneer 10 scooter has 4 inches of ground clearance. It will cope on grass, gravel and dirt paths, but there are other mobility scooters which would perform better in this area.

Explore our all-terrain mobility scooter collection.

How big is the Merits Pioneer 10? Will it fit indoors and how sharp does it turn?

The Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is fine for indoor use, provided you have a large home. Three-wheeled models are better at turning in tight spaces than 4 wheeled models.

If you have a compact home, contact us to see if this could work.

This scooter will work in commercial indoor settings such as stores and supermarkets.

The turning radius of the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is 62”.

Options & Upgrades

Accessories

How do I add accessories to the Pioneer 10? Which Accessories are available?

A full list of accessories can be seen in the options and upgrades for this product HERE.

Do you offer any free accessories with the Pioneer 10?

Yes! We offer an armrest saddle bag free with every Merits purchase.

Will the accessories ship together and installed on the Merits Pioneer 10?

With standard delivery, accessories are not assembled on the scooter at time of delivery. With white glove delivery, Merits accessories will be attached and Diestco accessories can be attached by request.

How to Purchase & What's Included

Why are mobility scooters so expensive?

We sell all our scooters at the minimum price (MAP) the manufacturer allows us to advertise for. If we advertise for cheaper, we could be prosecuted. This means we are cheaper or at the same price as all dealers complying with the rules. If you find another site selling for cheaper, we will price match, so long as they are within MAP. Scooters can be expensive because of the following reasons: The recent skyrocketing of shipping prices, coupled with rising inflation, have made these scooters significantly more expensive than they were, say one year ago.

Does Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Merits Pioneer 10?

Many heavy-duty/recreational mobility scooters do not qualify as medical devices under Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance strict rules. Though you might be disabled and using the device in a full medical sense, Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance seem to want to save as much money as they can, and do so by making the rules about which models qualify very strict. You might have spent significant time trying to find a Medicare/Medicaid provider online, to no avail. This is because it’s actually very hard for dealers to become Medicare providers, again making it hard for patients to get free scooters, again saving the insurance money. We don’t work with Medicare. We also do not bill private insurances directly. Some private insurances may reimburse you outside of Medicare’s framework. To check if your insurer does this, we recommend contacting them directly and asking. If they say yes, we’re happy to provide invoices/proof of purchases so you can get your money back from your insurer. Here’s a full disclaimer with regard to Medicare/Medicaid: Notice to Medicare/Medicaid Beneficiaries. Medicare will pay for medical equipment and supplies only if a supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have a Medicare supplier number. Medicare will not pay for any medical equipment and supplies we sell or rent to you. You will be personally and fully responsible for payment.

If you are sure about the model you want, all we would need is your payment method (easiest is credit card or cash/checking account card) and your shipping address. What happens after my order for the Merits Pioneer 10 is placed?

After your order for the Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is placed, you will see a screen that looks like this one:
You will also receive an email confirmation, detailing the item you brought and the price you paid. The email will come from: support@heavydutymobility.com. Your email confirmation will contain instructions regarding delivery, please read these carefully. As soon as your item ships, we will send you an email containing a tracking link. Clicking on this link will allow you to track the shipping progress of your scooter. The vast majority of Merits shipments are done through R&L carriers rlcarriers.com If you chose standard, curbside delivery at checkout: The shipping company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment - you don’t have to take the first day available - you can delay receiving your scooter for a couple of days if that works better for you. We will also provide you with their number so you can call to preemptively arrange an appointment, or incase they fail to call you. The shipping company will call you usually within an hour of delivery, to let you prepare yourself at the curbside nearest to your home. The truck (very often an 18-wheeler) will deposit your scooter on the curbside, on a wooden crate. For more info on unpacking, see the question below “How does my product arrive, is any setup required?” If you choose White Glove Delivery at checkout: The scooter will be sent to a technician in your area for setup. Once they have set it up (usually 1-2 business days), they will give you a call to arrange delivery. At the time of delivery appointment, the local technician will bring the scooter right into your house, wherever you want it. Shipping, Warranty & Returns

Shipping

How long from the time of order until I get my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter?

This very much depends on two factors: the stock status above and how far you are from Florida, where most Merits Pioneer 10 scooters ship out from. Bear in mind, different colors of the same model can have different stock statuses. The stock status for this scooter can be seen just under the product title at the top of the page.
  • This item can ship out as soon as the same business day the order is placed. Once shipped out, you can expect a transit time 4-5 business days. Please note these are indicative times and can vary based on how far you are from the supplier warehouse and the volume of orders being received. Also note that upgrades or extra accessory additions to your order may require extra time for installation.
  • If a Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is showing LEAD TIME with a number of weeks indicated, the estimated ship out time is that lead time plus standard ship out and transit time indicated in the paragraph above.

You can always contact us for more details at 1-888-233-5563 or live chat with an agent by clicking here.

Please note, we have excellent relationships with our suppliers/manufacturers. If we are showing an item as having a lead time, it’s almost certainly the same for other dealers who might not have the most up-to-date information on the websites and may show the item as having a lead time.

  • If a Merits Pioneer 10 scooter is showing OUT OF STOCK above, please contact us for more details. You can call us at 1-888-233-5563 or live chat with an agent by clicking here.

Please note, we have excellent relationships with our suppliers/manufacturers. If we are showing an item as out of stock, it’s almost certainly the same for other dealers who might not have the most up-to-date information on the websites and may show the item as in stock.

Why are there such long lead times on some mobility scooters?

Covid has dealt a horrible blow to pretty much every industry on the planet. Right from mining materials to processing them to the factories that produce parts, shipping and freight companies - at every stage of the chain there are workforce shortages and severe delays.

My Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter is showing a long lead time above. Why should I buy a scooter now if in any case I won’t get it right away?

Unfortunately, the way things are nowadays, with delays across the entire supply chain, if you wait until there is no lead time on your scooter, you might end up waiting forever. As soon as new stock comes in, it is assigned to orders that were already placed, sometimes weeks in advance. We don’t know how soon the situation will get better - and it may actually get worse before getting better again.

For this reason, customers are placing their orders as soon as they are able, to be placed on the list for as soon as the next scooters are ready to ship.

Where will my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter ship from?

Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooters generally ship from the main warehouse in Fort Myers, FL. In some cases, orders for the West Coast are shipped from a warehouse in the vicinity.

Who will ship my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter?

Merits Pioneer 10 are almost always shipped by R&L Carriers - a freight and trucking company. In most instances, your scooter is delivered by 18-wheeler, unless you choose white glove delivery.

How does the Merits Pioneer 10 mobibility scooter arrive – is any setup required?

If you choose white glove delivery, your scooter will be 100% ready to ride. With standard delivery, these scooters will need some assembly. Assembly is straightforward to most people but you may need some help from a handy relative or friend.

We are always here to help you over the phone with assembly.

You may need to:

  • Install the batteries.
  • Put the seat on its post.
  • The wheels might have some air let out for safety during transit. You should top them up to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer in the user’s manual.
  • The tiller may be folded down too. Simply move the tiller into position as per the manual instructions, allowing you to raise it to driving position.
  • Mirrors may need to be screwed into the handlebars.

How do I book a delivery appointment slot for my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter?

The shipping company delivering your scooter will call you to arrange delivery. We will also give you their number so you can call them to preemptively arrange an appointment.

What if I miss my delivery appointment slot for my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter?

If you miss your delivery appointment, the shipping company will usually take your scooter back to their local terminal in your area and try to reschedule an appointment. There is usually no charge for one extra appointment. Please contact us to keep us in the loop if you do miss your appointment so we can ensure the scooter isn’t sent all the way back to the place of origin.

What if my order hasn’t arrived by the time it was supposed to?

Especially since Covid, which made the truck driver shortage issue even worse than it was, your shipment might be delayed. If this happens, please call us 1-888-233-5563, or the number of the shipping company we provide you with so you can get an update on your shipping status.

What happens if my order for an Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter is damaged?

  • When your scooter arrives, do not sign any forms until you have opened the boxes and ascertained that everything is as it should be.
  • If the external boxes are damaged, make sure to note this next to your signature. Make sure to inspect the contents before signing.
  • If your scooter is damaged in a way that the entire scooter needs to be replaced, just refuse the entire delivery.
  • If your scooter is damaged in a way that a spare part needs to be sent out and installed (eg a broken mirror), accept the delivery, and list any damaged items next to your signature.
  • If you find damage after having signed for delivery without any damage notes, this can be really problematic as the shipping company may try to shift the blame onto you. This is why it’s important to check for damage, especially if the outside boxes are damaged.

What happens if my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter breaks down?

If your scooter malfunctions, please contact us.

Sometimes we are able to troubleshoot with you over the phone to fix the issue. In other cases, it’s a matter of shipping out a simple part, say if a knob needs replacing, under warranty conditions.

If necessary and you have an in-home service warranty, we will send out a technician to your home to repair your scooter. The time this is valid for varies according to the plan you purchased in the “Options & Upgrades” section on this page. This includes everything besides wear & tear (such as seat wear, flat tire etc.) and the batteries, which have a different warranty policy.

Depending on your location, it might take a few days to locate a local technician, arrange an appointment etc. This warranty service is not intended as an emergency breakdown service. If you are stuck and need urgent help, call 911.

Please note, it’s really important we don’t send technicians out for nothing, so to be open with you from the start, we will let you know that if a technician comes out for a problem which isn’t under warranty or was a user error, you may be charged for this visit.

Do I call you or the manufacturer if my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter breaks down?

Contact us before contacting the manufacturer.

How long does the warranty on Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooters last for? What’s included/excluded from the warranty?

The Pioneer 10 Scooter is issued a limited lifetime warranty on the frame of the scooter and a 12-month warranty on electrical components. The warranty begins immediately following purchase.

As an upgrade, we offer in-home warranties, where a technician will come to your home to repair your device. You can see these options in the "Options & Upgrades" section. This includes everything besides wear & tear (such as seat wear, flat tire etc.) and the batteries, which have a different warranty policy.

What can I do after the warranty period? Can I get spare parts for Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooters? Who repairs these scooters and where?

After the warranty period, you are still welcome to contact us at any time.

Parts are available through us or the manufacturer, though you will be charged for these.

If you need someone to install parts or for other labor services post-warranty, the same local technicians that repair your scooter under warranty can do so at a charge post-warranty.

Technicians are available throughout the contiguous USA.

Contact us for help finding a tech, or for more details.

Returns

What if I don't like my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter? Can I return or exchange it?

Daily Operation & Transportation

Daily Operation

Is the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter easy to drive? How does acceleration work? How does braking work?

The Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter is super easy to drive and control.

Remember, this is a scooter which was designed from scratch for seniors and those with disabilities. It takes into account that you might have slower reaction times and has automatic braking whenever you let go of the throttle.

It also features slow-speed mode for confined areas or whilst you’re building up your driving skills and want to go a little slower.

Acceleration/reverse is achieved by a lever in the handlebars, and braking is automatic when you let go of the brakes.

Due to the safety automatic brakes which kick in every time you let go of the throttle, your driving might seem a little jerky at first, but most people catch on very quickly and learn to use the throttle and brakes in a way that gives a smooth ride.

I only have use of my left hand. Can the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter work for left handed users? Can the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter be operated with one hand?

This scooter uses wig-wag throttle acceleration, meaning you can control it with one hand, without any modifications needed.

Can I ride the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter in the rain, snow, wind and hot sun?

  • Rain: It’s OK and safe if you get caught in the rain once in a while, or go through an occasional puddle, but you should try to avoid a trip if you know it’s going to rain.
  • Snow and ice: We cannot take responsibility for using the scooter in these kinds of weather conditions.
  • Cold weather: Fine, though it does negatively impact the battery health and lifetime.
  • Wind: Generally not an issue unless very strong winds that could tip the scooter over. If you have a mobility scooter with a canopy, remember, very strong winds can act as a sail to tip over your scooter.
  • Hot sun: No issue as far as the scooter is concerned. Remember to take along ample hydration!

Do the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter batteries need maintenance?

This mobility scooter uses maintenance-free batteries which do not need any care until they die, after around 2 years of use.

How often should my Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter be inspected?

It’s a good idea to have your scooter checked once a year by a qualified technician.

Call us 1-888-233-5563 to get details on a local technician in your area.

You should also call us or a local tech if you hear strange noises coming out of your scooter.

How many years can I expect the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter to last me?

For this kind of mobility scooter, you can expect to get a lifetime of around 7 years or more.

This obviously depends on the way you take care of your scooter amongst other factors.

Transportation

Will the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter fit in my car trunk/truck bed?

This scooter will not fit in the vast majority of car trunks. It will however fit on most pickup truck beds.

If you’re planning on transporting your mobility scooter on a pickup truck bed, you’ll probably need a ramp to get the scooter up onto the truck bed.

Please contact us for more details at 1-888-233-5563 or live chat with an agent by clicking here.

I don’t have a large enough vehicle to transport the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter. What are my options?

  • Electric lift: The most common solution is to purchase a platform-style vehicle lift, which sits on your trailer hitch.

If you don’t have a trailer hitch on your vehicle, you’ll need to have one installed. The platform lowers right down to road level, you ride the scooter onto the platform, secure the scooter with provided straps and then activate a lift which raises the platform a few feet off the ground. You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.

    Explore our electric lifts collection.

  • Manual Platform: Like an electric lift, this has a platform which sits on your trailer hitch, but this platform does not rise and decened, instead, it has a built-in ramp which flips out, allowing you to roll the scooter up onto the platform.

You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.

Explore our collection of manual platforms.

  • Scooter trailer: This is a full-fledged trailer on its own wheels, which attaches to your trailer hitch.

There is just one company that designs and produces a trailer specifically for mobility scooters, or you can just get any generic trailer whose specifications match the S4 in terms of weight and dimensions.

Explore our collection of scooter trailers.

Do you sell vehicle lifts, platform ramps and trailers for the Merits Pioneer 10 mobility scooter?

We do indeed. Explore our collection of vehicle lifts. Explore our collection of platform ramps. Explore our collection of scooter trailers.
