Quick Overview

The Avid by Merits Axcel Narrow P335N is billed as the first front wheel drive rehab power base built just 22.5 inches wide. Most complex rehab chairs trade indoor access for outdoor ability. This one refuses the trade. The narrow footprint threads doorframes, galley kitchens and tight hallway turns with a 26 inch turning radius, while 14 inch front drive tires and independent hydraulic suspension keep it planted on grass, gravel and broken sidewalk.

It earned a 2024 Mobility Management Product Award for packing full CRT positioning into that slim frame. Power recline sweeps from 85 to 160 degrees with 6 inches of shear reduction, and a 12 inch power seat elevation option brings counters, shelves and eye level conversation within reach. The seating frame accepts 14 to 20 inch widths and depths so an ATP can dial in the fit.

Underneath, a 90 amp R-NET controller runs paired 222 watt motors, the electronics platform clinicians already program every day and the gateway to alternative drive controls. Two 50Ah MK AGM batteries deliver up to 19 miles per charge and slide out through a tool free rear access panel. Bright LED lighting comes standard, and Merits finishes the shroud in five colors including Sapphire Blue and Camo Green.

The Axcel Narrow is coded K0856 and K0861, so it sits squarely in the complex rehab category. Call us for a configured quote built around your seating and drive control needs.

How to Purchase & What's Included

How do I get a price for the P335N?

We sell the P335N on a quote basis so we can pair you with the right configuration and the best available price. Call us toll free at 1-888-233-5563 or use our contact form and we will have a quote back to you the same business day in most cases.

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the P335N?

Most products in this range do not meet the strict medical device rules that Medicare and Medicaid use, so they rarely qualify for coverage. We do not work with Medicare and we do not bill private insurance directly.

Some private plans will reimburse you outside of the Medicare framework. The best way to find out is to call your insurer and ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Notice to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Medicare pays for equipment only when the supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have one, so Medicare will not pay for anything we sell you. You are personally and fully responsible for payment.

Warranty

What warranty comes with the P335N?

Merits backs the P335N with a manufacturer limited warranty. The exact coverage terms for this model are listed in the Specifications tab and the product documentation. Normal wear items and damage from misuse or accidents are excluded, as with all manufacturer warranties.

Documentation, Manuals & Safety

Official Merits documents for the Axcel Narrow

Key safety notes. Respect the 300 lb weight capacity and the 7.5 degree rated gradient. Keep the anti tipper front wheels installed at all times. Use the supplied 6A off board charger and charge in a dry ventilated space. A rehab chair at this level should be fitted and programmed by a supplier working with your clinician so drive speeds and seating angles match your needs.

Daily Operation & Transportation

Daily driving runs through the R-NET joystick, which controls speed profiles, lighting and the powered seat functions. The two 50Ah MK AGM batteries charge overnight with the 6A off board charger through the joystick port, and the tool free rear battery compartment means a caregiver or technician can reach the batteries in seconds without wrenches.

Around the house the 22.5 inch width is the headline. It passes openings that stop 24 and 25 inch bases, and the front wheel drive geometry lets you nose square into a doorway and make the 90 degree turn on the spot. Outdoors the 14 inch drive tires, 9 inch rear casters and 3 inches of ground clearance handle thresholds, curb cuts and uneven yards.

For transport, plan around a powerbase that weighs 350 to 385 lb depending on configuration. It does not fold or disassemble for trunk loading, so move it in an accessible vehicle with a ramp or platform lift, or on a heavy rated exterior carrier. Occupied transit setups should be discussed with your supplier at order time.

Common Questions

How wide is the Axcel Narrow power wheelchair

The overall width is 22.5 inches, which Merits states makes it the first front wheel drive rehab power base this narrow. It fits doorways and hallways that block most 24 to 26 inch wide rehab chairs.

Is the Axcel Narrow different from the standard Axcel

Yes. The Axcel Narrow is its own model, the P335N, with a slimmer 22.5 inch base, 14 inch drive wheels and its own spec sheet. The standard Axcel P335 shares the platform but is wider and adds power tilt options.

How far does it go on a charge

Merits rates the Axcel Narrow at up to 19 miles per charge using its two 50Ah MK AGM batteries. Real range varies with rider weight, terrain and temperature.

What positioning features does it offer

Power recline adjusts from 85 to 160 degrees with 6 inches of shear reduction, and a 12 inch power seat elevation module is available. Seating is built to order in 14 to 20 inch widths and depths.

Can it use alternative drive controls

Yes. The chair runs R-NET electronics with a 90 amp module, and Merits offers ASL alternative drive options so it can be set up for head array, sip and puff and other specialty inputs.

Will insurance or Medicare cover the Axcel Narrow

It carries HCPCS codes K0856 and K0861, the Group 3 single power option and multiple power option base codes, so it can qualify for funding when a clinician documents medical need. Ask us about the evaluation and paperwork process.

Is the Axcel Narrow good outdoors

Yes, that is its main advantage over other narrow chairs. Front wheel drive 14 inch tires, independent hydraulic suspension, 9 inch rear casters and 3 inches of ground clearance let it handle grass, gravel and uneven pavement at up to 5.2 mph.

How much does the Axcel Narrow weigh

Total chair weight runs 350 to 385 lb depending on configuration. It transports in a ramp or lift equipped vehicle rather than folding into a trunk.

Why buy the P335N from us?

  • We configure the Axcel Narrow with you before quoting, so seat size, elevation and drive controls are right the first time rather than guessed from a dropdown
  • Real humans in the US answer our phones and walk you through the K0856 and K0861 paperwork questions that come with a rehab chair
  • We are an authorized Merits dealer, so your chair ships new from the factory with full manufacturer warranty support
  • Price match promise on identical configurations from any authorized dealer
  • We stay with you after delivery for parts, batteries and service questions for the life of the chair

Is Merits a Good Brand?

Merits Health Products has been building mobility equipment for more than three decades and runs its US operation out of Fort Myers, Florida. Unlike marketing brands that rebadge someone else's chairs, Merits manufactures its own power bases, which shows up in details like the hydraulic suspension and tool free battery bay on this chair. Avid is the Merits complex rehab line, developed with clinician input for users who need true positioning rather than a basic power chair, and the Axcel Narrow's 2024 Mobility Management Product Award signals the industry took notice. Parts availability and dealer support in the US are solid because the company has a long established national network.
