A Look at the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9

Mobility devices come in a range of style and features, but time and time again, Merits has proven to provide slim designed models ideal for outdoor and indoor use. The 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 is the ideal heavy duty 3-wheel mobility scooter for those who want more than just a way to get from one place to another. The device is rated for gradients of up to 12 degrees, so inclines are rarely a problem and the powerful 24V DC motor offers exceptional rear wheel power at all times. A full range of 32 miles ensures you never run out of power during your busy day and the dual 12V batteries assist in powering all necessary safety features including lights, turning signals, and a loud horn. The small turning radius of just 50” enables the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter to be an exceptional companion for your grocery needs and the larger than average tires grip multiple surfaces for ideal use in the great outdoors. The Pioneer 9 is a truly heavy duty mobility scooter with the ability to carry up to 500lbs at a swift 8mph. Anti-tip wheels help the device remain stable even on uneven surfaces, so you can travel with confidence on every outing. The Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter will allow you to maintain your independence without compromise. Additionally, easy controls and an ergonomic design allow virtually anyone to pilot the device effortlessly.

Comfort Where It Counts

When traveling in a full size mobility scooter, comfort matters. This is especially true when your mobility device is capable of up to 32 miles at 8mph like the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter. The Pioneer 9 features a fully adjustable, swivel captain’s chair with swing-up armrests that make loading and unloading from the mobility device easy. Not only is the chair made to be convenient, but orthopedic rated to provide optimal support on even the longest of journeys. Once seated onboard the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9, the driver has the ability to adjust the tiller to their personal preference. One hand adjustment of the tiller allows you to put it at the exact angle that is most comfortable for you. Along the journey, easy reach controls and an ergonomic design allow you to pilot the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 without tiring from strain. A fun and comfortable ride is what you can expect from the Pioneer 9.

Indoor Rated – Ideal for Tight Spaces

Often, full size mobility devices can be cumbersome to contend with indoors. Small spaces, such as hallways offer little ability to turn around and the driver is often forced to back out of these areas. That can be dangerous and completely uncomfortable. The Pioneer 9 is a 3-wheel mobility device. The rear wheel drive configuration and the single front, swivel wheel offers a solution to the problem and the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 turns around in just 50”, so whether you are going to the store or using the device around the home (as long as you have a large home), the Pioneer 9 is always available. Just because the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter is rated for indoors does not mean it is incapable of performing outside. Although it is not a true all-terrain mobility device, it does maintain larger than average pneumatic tires that expertly grip the ground on a variety of terrains.

Are There Ample Safety Features?

Yes. Onboard the Pioneer 9, drivers enjoy an array of safety features including a bright headlight for night driving or driving in dimly lit areas. There is also a blinker and horn system standard. For your personal safety, the tiller houses a USB port for charging your device, so you never feel alone no matter how long you stay out.

How fast does the Merits Pioneer 9 go?

At full speed, you can reach 8 mph top speed.

If a faster top speed is important to you, please check out our collection of recreational mobility scooters, pre-selected for faster speeds.

How long do the Merits Pioneer 9 batteries last per charge? How many years of use can I get out of the batteries?

Battery running time per charge is measured in miles as opposed to time i.e. how many miles can a fully charged set of batteries take the scooter?

The answer depends on the user’s weight as well as the kind of terrain the scooter is operated upon.

Please take these manufacturer figures with a grain of salt, bearing in mind manufacturers may test their scooters in optimum conditions you won’t find in real life.

For a Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter, the batteries last: 32 miles.

The lifetime of your Merits Pioneer 9 batteries is approximately 2 years, but very much depends on how much you use your scooter and whether you take good care of your batteries.

The cost of replacing a set of Merits Pioneer 9 batteries is approximately $429

What kind of batteries are used in the Merits Pioneer 9?

This mobility scooter uses sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries. These batteries are maintenance free, meaning you don’t need to add water to them or anything like that.

They happily stay under their shroud for the duration of their lifetime and you shouldn’t need to do anything to them at all.

Lithium-ion batteries are not used, primarily due to cost. With batteries expiring after 2-3 years, the cost of replacing lithium batteries for a machine this size would run into several thousand dollars, vs. gel-cell which is more around the $500 mark.

Will the Merits Pioneer 9 seat fit me?

This scooter’s seat width is 22”.

This is a great seat size for most people and is more generous than most standard/travel mobility scooters.

If in doubt, we recommend measuring a chair in your house that you're comfortable on, to compare sizes.

How much weight can the Merits Pioneer 9 carry?

The weight capacity of the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter is 500 lbs.

What kind of ground clearance does the Merits Pioneer 9 have? Is it good for paths and trails?

The 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 has 4 inches of ground clearance. It will cope on grass, gravel and dirt paths, but there are other mobility scooters which would perform better in this area.

Explore our all-terrain mobility scooter collection.

How big is the Merits Pioneer 9? Will it fit indoors and how sharp does it turn?

The Merits Pioneer 9 is fine for indoor use, provided you have a large home. Three-wheeled models are better at turning in tight spaces than 4 wheeled models.

If you have a compact home, contact us to see if this could work.

This scooter will work in commercial indoor settings such as stores and supermarkets.

The turning radius of the Merits Pioneer 9 is 50”.

Options & Upgrades

Accessories

How do I add accessories to the Pioneer 9? Which Accessories are available?

A full list of accessories can be seen in the options and upgrades for this product HERE.

Do you offer any free accessories with the Pioneer 9?

Yes! We offer an armrest saddle bag free with every Merits purchase.

Will the accessories ship together and installed on the Merits Pioneer 9?

With standard delivery, accessories are not assembled on the scooter at time of delivery. With white glove delivery, Merits accessories will be attached and Diestco accessories can be attached by request.

How to Purchase & What's Included

Why are mobility scooters so expensive?

We sell all our scooters at the minimum price (MAP) the manufacturer allows us to advertise for. If we advertise for cheaper, we could be prosecuted. This means we are cheaper or at the same price as all dealers complying with the rules. If you find another site selling for cheaper, we will price match, so long as they are within MAP. Scooters can be expensive because of the following reasons: The recent skyrocketing of shipping prices, coupled with rising inflation, have made these scooters significantly more expensive than they were, say one year ago.

Does Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Merits Pioneer 9?

Many heavy-duty/recreational mobility scooters do not qualify as medical devices under Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance strict rules. Though you might be disabled and using the device in a full medical sense, Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance seem to want to save as much money as they can, and do so by making the rules about which models qualify very strict. You might have spent significant time trying to find a Medicare/Medicaid provider online, to no avail. This is because it’s actually very hard for dealers to become Medicare providers, again making it hard for patients to get free scooters, again saving the insurance money. We don’t work with Medicare. We also do not bill private insurances directly. Some private insurances may reimburse you outside of Medicare’s framework. To check if your insurer does this, we recommend contacting them directly and asking. If they say yes, we’re happy to provide invoices/proof of purchases so you can get your money back from your insurer. Here’s a full disclaimer with regard to Medicare/Medicaid: Notice to Medicare/Medicaid Beneficiaries. Medicare will pay for medical equipment and supplies only if a supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have a Medicare supplier number. Medicare will not pay for any medical equipment and supplies we sell or rent to you. You will be personally and fully responsible for payment.

What do I need to do to purchase the Merits Pioneer 9 scooter online/over the phone?

To purchase over the phone, simply call our toll-free number 1-888-233-5563 and we can help you from there. If you are sure about the model you want, all we would need is your payment method (easiest is credit card or cash/checking account card) and your shipping address. If you aren’t quite sure which model to choose, we can offer suggestions and advice to your heart’s content - until you’re perfectly satisfied.

What happens after my order for the Merits Pioneer 9 is placed?

You will also receive an email confirmation, detailing the item you brought and the price you paid. The email will come from: support@heavydutymobility.com. Your email confirmation will contain instructions regarding delivery, please read these carefully. As soon as your item ships, we will send you an email containing a tracking link. Clicking on this link will allow you to track the shipping progress of your scooter. The vast majority of Merits shipments are done through R&L carriers rlcarriers.com If you chose standard, curbside delivery at checkout: The shipping company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment - you don’t have to take the first day available - you can delay receiving your scooter for a couple of days if that works better for you. We will also provide you with their number so you can call to preemptively arrange an appointment, or incase they fail to call you. The shipping company will call you usually within an hour of delivery, to let you prepare yourself at the curbside nearest to your home. The truck (very often an 18-wheeler) will deposit your scooter on the curbside, on a wooden crate. For more info on unpacking, see the question below “How does my product arrive, is any setup required?” If you choose White Glove Delivery at checkout: The scooter will be sent to a technician in your area for setup. At the time of delivery appointment, the local technician will bring the scooter right into your house, wherever you want it. Shipping, Warranty & Returns

Shipping

How long from the time of order until I get my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter?

Bear in mind, different colors of the same model can have different stock statuses. The stock status for this scooter can be seen just under the product title at the top of the page.

Once shipped out, you can expect a transit time 4-5 business days. Please note these are indicative times and can vary based on how far you are from the supplier warehouse and the volume of orders being received. Also note that upgrades or extra accessory additions to your order may require extra time for installation.
  • If a Merits Pioneer 9 scooter is showing LEAD TIME with a number of weeks indicated, the estimated ship out time is that lead time plus standard ship out and transit time indicated in the paragraph above.

    [xyz-ihs snippet="Live-Chat"]

Please note, we have excellent relationships with our suppliers/manufacturers. If we are showing an item as having a lead time, it’s almost certainly the same for other dealers who might not have the most up-to-date information on the websites and may show the item as having a lead time.

  • If a Merits Pioneer 9 scooter is showing OUT OF STOCK above, please contact us for more details. You can call us at [xyz-ihs snippet="Live-Chat-three"]

Please note, we have excellent relationships with our suppliers/manufacturers. If we are showing an item as out of stock, it’s almost certainly the same for other dealers who might not have the most up-to-date information on the websites and may show the item as in stock.

Why are there such long lead times on some mobility scooters?

Covid has dealt a horrible blow to pretty much every industry on the planet. Right from mining materials to processing them to the factories that produce parts, shipping and freight companies - at every stage of the chain there are workforce shortages and severe delays.

My Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter is showing a long lead time above. Why should I buy a scooter now if in any case I won’t get it right away?

Unfortunately, the way things are nowadays, with delays across the entire supply chain, if you wait until there is no lead time on your scooter, you might end up waiting forever. As soon as new stock comes in, it is assigned to orders that were already placed, sometimes weeks in advance. We don’t know how soon the situation will get better - and it may actually get worse before getting better again.

For this reason, customers are placing their orders as soon as they are able, to be placed on the list for as soon as the next scooters are ready to ship.

Where will my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter ship from?

Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooters generally ship from the main warehouse in Fort Myers, FL. In some cases, orders for the West Coast are shipped from a warehouse in the vicinity.

Who will ship my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter?

Merits Pioneer 9 are almost always shipped by R&L Carriers - a freight and trucking company. In most instances, your scooter is delivered by 18-wheeler, unless you choose white glove delivery.

How does the Merits Pioneer 9 mobibility scooter arrive – is any setup required?

If you choose white glove delivery, your scooter will be 100% ready to ride. With standard delivery, these scooters will need some assembly. Assembly is straightforward to most people but you may need some help from a handy relative or friend.

We are always here to help you over the phone with assembly.

You may need to:

  • Install the batteries.
  • Put the seat on its post.
  • The wheels might have some air let out for safety during transit. You should top them up to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer in the user’s manual.
  • The tiller may be folded down too. Simply move the tiller into position as per the manual instructions, allowing you to raise it to driving position.
  • Mirrors may need to be screwed into the handlebars.

There is usually no charge for one extra appointment. Please contact us to keep us in the loop if you do miss your appointment so we can ensure the scooter isn’t sent all the way back to the place of origin.

What if my order hasn’t arrived by the time it was supposed to?

Especially since Covid, which made the truck driver shortage issue even worse than it was, your shipment might be delayed. If this happens, please call us 1-888-233-5563, or the number of the shipping company we provide you with so you can get an update on your shipping status.

What happens if my order for an Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter is damaged?

  • When your scooter arrives, do not sign any forms until you have opened the boxes and ascertained that everything is as it should be.
  • If the external boxes are damaged, make sure to note this next to your signature. Make sure to inspect the contents before signing.
  • If your scooter is damaged in a way that the entire scooter needs to be replaced, just refuse the entire delivery.
  • If your scooter is damaged in a way that a spare part needs to be sent out and installed (eg a broken mirror), accept the delivery, and list any damaged items next to your signature.
  • If you find damage after having signed for delivery without any damage notes, this can be really problematic as the shipping company may try to shift the blame onto you. This is why it’s important to check for damage, especially if the outside boxes are damaged.

What happens if my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter breaks down?

If your scooter malfunctions, please contact us.

Sometimes we are able to troubleshoot with you over the phone to fix the issue. In other cases, it’s a matter of shipping out a simple part, say if a knob needs replacing, under warranty conditions.

If necessary and you have an in-home service warranty, we will send out a technician to your home to repair your scooter. The time this is valid for varies according to the plan you purchased in the “Options & Upgrades” section on this page. This includes everything besides wear & tear (such as seat wear, flat tire etc.) and the batteries, which have a different warranty policy.

Depending on your location, it might take a few days to locate a local technician, arrange an appointment etc. This warranty service is not intended as an emergency breakdown service. If you are stuck and need urgent help, call 911.

Please note, it’s really important we don’t send technicians out for nothing, so to be open with you from the start, we will let you know that if a technician comes out for a problem which isn’t under warranty or was a user error, you may be charged for this visit.

Do I call you or the manufacturer if my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter breaks down?

Contact us before contacting the manufacturer.

How long does the warranty on Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooters last for? What’s included/excluded from the warranty?

The Pioneer 9 Scooter is issued a limited lifetime warranty on the frame of the scooter and a 12-month warranty on electrical components. The warranty begins immediately following purchase.

As an upgrade, we offer in-home warranties, where a technician will come to your home to repair your device. You can see these options in the "Options & Upgrades" section. This includes everything besides wear & tear (such as seat wear, flat tire etc.) and the batteries, which have a different warranty policy.

What can I do after the warranty period? Can I get spare parts for Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooters? Who repairs these scooters and where?

After the warranty period, you are still welcome to contact us at any time.

Parts are available through us or the manufacturer, though you will be charged for these.

If you need someone to install parts or for other labor services post-warranty, the same local technicians that repair your scooter under warranty can do so at a charge post-warranty.

Technicians are available throughout the contiguous USA.

Contact us for help finding a tech, or for more details.

Daily Operation & Transportation

Daily Operation

Is the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter easy to drive? How does acceleration work? How does braking work?

The Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter is super easy to drive and control.

Remember, this is a scooter which was designed from scratch for seniors and those with disabilities. It takes into account that you might have slower reaction times and has automatic braking whenever you let go of the throttle.

It also features slow-speed mode for confined areas or whilst you’re building up your driving skills and want to go a little slower.

Acceleration/reverse is achieved by a lever in the handlebars, and braking is automatic when you let go of the brakes.

Due to the safety automatic brakes which kick in every time you let go of the throttle, your driving might seem a little jerky at first, but most people catch on very quickly and learn to use the throttle and brakes in a way that gives a smooth ride.

I only have use of my left hand. Can the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter work for left handed users? Can the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter be operated with one hand?

This scooter uses wig-wag throttle acceleration, meaning you can control it with one hand, without any modifications needed.

Can I ride the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter in the rain, snow, wind and hot sun?

  • Rain: It’s OK and safe if you get caught in the rain once in a while, or go through an occasional puddle, but you should try to avoid a trip if you know it’s going to rain.
  • Snow and ice: We cannot take responsibility for using the scooter in these kinds of weather conditions.
  • Cold weather: Fine, though it does negatively impact the battery health and lifetime.
  • Wind: Generally not an issue unless very strong winds that could tip the scooter over. If you have a mobility scooter with a canopy, remember, very strong winds can act as a sail to tip over your scooter.
  • Hot sun: No issue as far as the scooter is concerned. Remember to take along ample hydration!

Do the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter batteries need maintenance?

This mobility scooter uses maintenance-free batteries which do not need any care until they die, after around 2 years of use.

How often should my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter be inspected?

It’s a good idea to have your scooter checked once a year by a qualified technician.

Call us 1-888-233-5563 to get details on a local technician in your area.

You should also call us or a local tech if you hear strange noises coming out of your scooter.

How many years can I expect the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter to last me?

For this kind of mobility scooter, you can expect to get a lifetime of around 7 years or more.

This obviously depends on the way you take care of your scooter amongst other factors.

Transportation

Will the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter fit in my car trunk/truck bed?

This scooter will not fit in the vast majority of car trunks. It will however fit on most pickup truck beds.

If you’re planning on transporting your mobility scooter on a pickup truck bed, you’ll probably need a ramp to get the scooter up onto the truck bed.

Please contact us for more details at [xyz-ihs snippet="Live-Chat-three"]

I don’t have a large enough vehicle to transport the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter. What are my options?

  • Electric lift: The most common solution is to purchase a platform-style vehicle lift, which sits on your trailer hitch.

If you don’t have a trailer hitch on your vehicle, you’ll need to have one installed. The platform lowers right down to road level, you ride the scooter onto the platform, secure the scooter with provided straps and then activate a lift which raises the platform a few feet off the ground. You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.

    Explore our electric lifts collection.

  • Manual Platform: Like an electric lift, this has a platform which sits on your trailer hitch, but this platform does not rise and decened, instead, it has a built-in ramp which flips out, allowing you to roll the scooter up onto the platform.

You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.

Explore our collection of manual platforms.

  • Scooter trailer: This is a full-fledged trailer on its own wheels, which attaches to your trailer hitch.

There is just one company that designs and produces a trailer specifically for mobility scooters, or you can just get any generic trailer whose specifications match the S4 in terms of weight and dimensions.

Explore our collection of scooter trailers.

Do you sell vehicle lifts, platform ramps and trailers for the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter?

We do indeed. Explore our collection of vehicle lifts. Explore our collection of platform ramps. Explore our collection of scooter trailers.
