The Avid by Merits Ultra HD P331 is the heavy duty powerbase in the Avid complex rehab line from Merits Health Products. It pairs a 450 lb weight capacity with a mid wheel drive layout that turns in just 21 inches, so larger riders get true indoor maneuverability without stepping up to a wide rear wheel drive frame. The base itself measures only 27 inches across, narrow enough for standard doorways and hallway turns.
Seating is where the Ultra HD separates from consumer heavy duty chairs. The 4 post rehab seat adjusts from 20 to 24 inches in width and 16 to 20 inches in depth, the backrest reclines from 90 to 110 degrees, and the factory can build the chair with power tilt up to 50 degrees plus positioning components, trunk supports and headrest choices. That makes the P331 a chair a supplier or clinician can actually fit to the rider rather than a one size frame.
Underneath, dual in line 2 pole 200W motors drive 12 inch wheels through front and rear suspension, clearing thresholds and uneven pavement while keeping the ride settled. Key safety notes. The chair is rated for slopes up to 6 degrees, so avoid steeper ramps and side slopes. The included transit tie down brackets are for securing an unoccupied chair only, and the rider should transfer to a vehicle seat during transport. Always wear the seat belt, keep speed low in tilt, and charge only with the supplied 6A off board charger.
Daily driving runs through the PG VR2-A2 joystick, which a supplier can program for speed, acceleration and braking feel to match the rider. Top speed is 5 mph and the mid wheel base turns within its own footprint, so kitchens, bathrooms and store aisles stay manageable.
Charging is simple. Plug the 6A off board charger into the joystick port overnight and the twin 22NF batteries wake up ready for as much as 19 miles with the 55Ah AGM option. The tool free battery box slides open without wrenches when the batteries eventually need replacement.
For transportation, plan on a van, lift or trailer. The Ultra HD weighs 288 to 310 lb depending on configuration and does not fold or disassemble into car trunk pieces. I needed a mobility scooter that was auto-folding, but not overly engineered where problems can arise, was not too heavy to lift by myself, would easily fit in the trunk of my car, and not be overly expensive. Wishful thinking I thought. Until I discovered the MOJO on my computer. This scooter ticked all my boxes, and more. It is comfortable, well built, is easy to charge the batteries without having to bend down to remove them, and even if you do want to remove them they are accessible from the standing position. the tiller is fully adjustable as are the arm rests, the folding/unfolding functions are easily initiated, and the axle release is easily achieved. A well engineered piece of kit. Now, for the customer service: I can honestly say that I have never come across anything like it; it is absolutely perfect. The gentleman I dealt with 'bent over backwards' to help me without pressuring me into a purchase, and to ensure I was buying a scooter that was right for me. Because I live in New Zealand I knew I was creating a lot more work for him, but he never complained. This and my MOJO are very much appreciated.
