Quick Overview

The Wheelchair Carrier Model 117 Mini Electric Lift is a hitch mounted platform lift sized for the lightest end of the mobility fleet. It carries travel scooters and folding power chairs weighing up to 150 lb on a 22 by 37 inch usable platform, and it does the lifting for you. Drive your scooter onto the lowered platform, cinch the two built in retractable ratchets, and hold the switch box rocker while the electric actuator raises the deck to travel height.

At 88 lb the Model 117 is one of the lightest powered lifts Wheelchair Carrier builds, which is exactly the point. It slides into a 1 1/4 inch or 2 inch square receiver on a Class II or Class III hitch, so it works behind sedans and small crossovers that could never run a full size powerchair lift. Ground clearance of up to 24 inches keeps the folded platform from scraping on driveways and parking ramps.

The whole assembly is fabricated from steel with an e-coat dip and powder topcoat, the same corrosion protection process used on automotive frames, and every unit is made in the USA. When you park, the platform folds itself up into a vertical stowaway position so the back of your vehicle stays short and visible in the mirror.

Power comes from your vehicle battery through the included 21 foot wire harness, which carries a 30 amp resettable circuit breaker so a fault trips the breaker instead of your vehicle wiring. Wheelchair Carrier backs the lift with a 3 year warranty.

Options & Upgrades

Options & Upgrades

The Model 117 is configured to order. Every option below is priced in your quote. Call us toll free at 1-888-233-5563 and we will walk through the choices with you and confirm current pricing and lead time.

  • Swing Away Kit No swing away, Add Model 130 Swing Away for liftgate access (adds $495)
  • Spare Ratchet Strap Kit None, two retractable ratchet straps included, Add bolt on ratchet strap kit as a spare, priced in quote

Accessories

Two retractable ratchet straps come standard in the box and are the primary tie down for the scooter, so most owners need nothing extra on day one. Wheelchair Carrier also offers bolt on ratchet strap kits as replacements or spares through its dealer network. If your vehicle has a 1 1/4 inch receiver, confirm the hitch class rating with us before ordering since the lift itself fits either receiver size.

How to Purchase & What's Included

How do I get a price for the Model 117?

We sell the Model 117 on a quote basis so we can pair you with the right configuration and the best available price. Call us toll free at 1-888-233-5563 or use our contact form and we will have a quote back to you the same business day in most cases.

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Model 117?

Most products in this range do not meet the strict medical device rules that Medicare and Medicaid use, so they rarely qualify for coverage. We do not work with Medicare and we do not bill private insurance directly.

Some private plans will reimburse you outside of the Medicare framework. The best way to find out is to call your insurer and ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Notice to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Medicare pays for equipment only when the supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have one, so Medicare will not pay for anything we sell you. You are personally and fully responsible for payment.

Documentation, Manuals & Safety

Official documents from Wheelchair Carrier

Key safety notes

  • Never exceed the hitch manufacturer's recommended towing and tongue capacity for your vehicle
  • Keep the loaded weight of the mobility device at or under 150 lb
  • Secure the device with both retractable ratchets before every trip
  • The 30 amp resettable breaker in the harness must stay in the circuit, never bypass it

Daily Operation & Transportation

The Model 117 runs off your vehicle's 12V battery through the included 21 foot harness, so there is nothing to charge and no separate battery pack to maintain. A handheld switch box raises and lowers the platform, and the 30 amp resettable breaker protects the circuit if anything binds.

Daily loading takes about a minute. Lower the platform to the ground, drive or roll the scooter on, pull out the two retractable ratchets and hook them to the frame, then raise the platform to travel height. When the lift is empty it automatically folds up into its vertical stowaway position, keeping rear overhang short for parking.

Because the lift adds 88 lb of tongue weight plus the weight of your scooter, check that the combined figure stays inside your hitch's tongue rating. The 24 inch ground clearance handles steep driveway transitions, but as with any hitch carrier you should glance back after big dips the first few drives to learn your vehicle's clearance.

Common Questions

What mobility devices fit on the Model 117

It is built for lightweight travel scooters and folding power chairs up to 150 lb with footprints that fit the 22 by 37 inch usable platform. Most 3 and 4 wheel travel scooters qualify, but weigh your device with its batteries before ordering.

What hitch does my vehicle need

A Class II or Class III hitch with either a 1 1/4 inch or 2 inch square receiver. Never exceed the hitch manufacturer's recommended capacity, and remember the lift itself adds 88 lb of tongue weight before the scooter goes on.

How is the lift powered

It wires to your vehicle's 12V battery through the included 21 foot harness. A 30 amp resettable circuit breaker is built into the harness, so an electrical fault trips the breaker rather than damaging your vehicle wiring.

Can I still open my liftgate with the lift installed

With the standard configuration the folded lift sits behind the rear doors. Adding the optional Model 130 swing away lets the whole lift pivot to the side so the liftgate or tailgate opens fully.

Does the platform fold up when not in use

Yes. The Model 117 automatically folds into a vertical stowaway position when the platform is empty, which shortens rear overhang and keeps the carrier visible in your mirror.

Where is it made and what is the warranty

Every Model 117 is made in the USA from e-coated and powder finished steel. Wheelchair Carrier covers the lift with a 3 year warranty, with electrical components typically covered for 1 year through its dealers.

Is installation something I can do myself

Many owners self install. The lift slides into the receiver and the harness routes to the battery, and Wheelchair Carrier publishes a step by step installation video. A hitch shop can do the job in under an hour if you prefer.

Why buy the Model 117 from us?

  • We confirm fitment before you buy. Tell us your scooter model and your vehicle's hitch class and we verify the 150 lb capacity and tongue weight math for you
  • Quote includes the right configuration, with or without the Model 130 swing away, so there are no surprise add ons at delivery
  • Real humans on the phone who sell the scooters this lift carries every day, so we know which travel scooters actually fit the 22 by 37 inch platform
  • We coordinate freight to the lower 48 and walk you through the factory installation video before the box arrives
  • Warranty help from a US dealer if you ever need parts inside the 3 year coverage

Is Wheelchair Carrier a Good Brand?

Wheelchair Carrier is one of the few hitch lift makers that still designs, fabricates and assembles its products entirely in the United States, and it stamps Made in the USA right into the steel of the platform. The company has specialized in vehicle carriers and lifts for mobility equipment for decades, sells through an established national dealer network, and answers its own support lines in Michigan. Its all steel frames get an automotive style e-coat plus powder finish, and the company stands behind the Model 117 with a 3 year warranty, which is longer coverage than most imported carriers offer.
