Quick Overview

The Tilt N Tote Model 001 from WheelChair Carrier solves the hardest part of traveling with a folding wheelchair, which is getting the chair into the vehicle. Instead of hoisting the chair into a trunk or cargo area, you pull one pin and the carrier's large saddle tilts down to the pavement. Roll the folded chair into the saddle, tip it forward until the pull pin snaps back into its locked position and the chair rides upright behind your bumper. Nothing about the wheelchair has to be modified or adjusted for the carrier to work.

The whole frame is welded from steel in Wauseon Ohio and protected by an e coat base layer under a weather resistant powder finish. At 23 lb the carrier adds very little tongue weight to your hitch, yet it holds chairs up to 100 lb. A folding wheelchair up to 15.5 inches wide when closed fits between the saddles, and the sliding front saddle adjusts to match your chair before you lock it down with the bolts.

Three points hold the chair in transit. The hold down arm drops its prongs over the rear wheel, a cam buckle strap cinches the arm tight and the included bungee cord captures the front casters. When you are driving without the chair, the saddle folds up flat against the hold down arm so the carrier tucks in close to the bumper and keeps your tailgate area manageable.

The Model 001 mounts on any Class 1, 2 or 3 trailer hitch fitted with a common ball mount, and the included anti rotation bracket clamps it steady on drawbars under 2.5 inches wide. WheelChair Carrier recommends a mounting height of 9 to 13 inches above the ground so the tilt action stays comfortable.

Accessories

Every Model 001 ships with the pieces needed to secure a chair, including the hold down arm, the anti rotation bracket, a 15 inch bungee cord for the front casters and the mounting bolt kit. The optional 022 fitted cover is the accessory we suggest most often for owners who park outdoors, since it protects the chair upholstery and the carrier finish from rain and road grime. Riders who also own a powerchair or scooter can step up to the Electric Tilt N Tote Model 101 or one of WheelChair Carrier's powered lift models within the same product family.

How to Purchase & What's Included

How do I get a price for the Model 001?

We sell the Model 001 on a quote basis so we can pair you with the right configuration and the best available price. Call us toll free at 1-888-233-5563 or use our contact form and we will have a quote back to you the same business day in most cases.

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Model 001?

Most products in this range do not meet the strict medical device rules that Medicare and Medicaid use, so they rarely qualify for coverage. We do not work with Medicare and we do not bill private insurance directly.

Some private plans will reimburse you outside of the Medicare framework. The best way to find out is to call your insurer and ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Notice to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Medicare pays for equipment only when the supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have one, so Medicare will not pay for anything we sell you. You are personally and fully responsible for payment.

Documentation, Manuals & Safety

Official WheelChair Carrier documents for the Model 001

Key safety notes from the manual. Never exceed the 100 lb capacity or the tongue weight rating of your hitch, which must carry the carrier plus the chair. Verify the pull pin has snapped into its locked position and the chair is fully secured before driving. Inspect the carrier regularly for loose or worn parts and stop using it until any damaged part is repaired. WheelChair Carrier recommends a preventative maintenance inspection at least once a year.

Daily Operation & Transportation

Loading takes under a minute once the front saddle is adjusted to your chair. Remove the quarter inch safety pin, swing the hold down arm out of the way and tilt the large saddle down to the ground. Roll the folded chair in so the rear wheels sit in the saddle, then tip the chair and saddle forward until the pull pin locks. Drop the hold down arm prongs over the rear wheel, hook the securing strap into the arm pivot and pull it snug without overtightening, then loop the bungee through the front casters.

Unloading reverses the process. Support the chair by its handle while you release the hold down arm so the chair rolls down under control. When no chair is aboard, rotate the saddle up against the hold down arm and lower the arm to lock the carrier in its folded stow away position against the bumper.

Care is simple. Keep the pivot points and latches greased so they move freely, retighten hardware now and then and touch up any bare metal with gloss enamel to stop rust. Check the carrier more often if your roads are salted in winter.

Common Questions

Do I have to lift my wheelchair onto the Tilt N Tote?

No. The large saddle tilts down to the ground so you roll the folded chair on, then tip it forward until the pull pin locks it upright. You guide the chair rather than lift it.

What hitch does my vehicle need?

Any Class 1, 2 or 3 trailer hitch fitted with a standard ball mount. The tow ball comes off and the carrier bolts to the drawbar with the included hardware and anti rotation bracket. The drawbar should be under 2.5 inches wide.

Will my wheelchair fit this carrier?

The Model 001 is made for standard folding manual wheelchairs up to 15.5 inches wide when closed, with rear drive wheels roughly 20 to 26 inches in diameter. Rigid frame chairs and powerchairs need a different carrier.

How is the chair held in place while driving?

Three ways. The hold down arm drops its prongs over the rear wheel, a cam buckle strap pulls the arm tight and the included bungee cord secures the front casters.

Can I still open my tailgate or liftgate with the carrier installed?

When no chair is loaded the saddle folds up against the hold down arm, keeping the carrier compact against the bumper. Access depends on your vehicle, and mounting the carrier above or below the drawbar helps set a workable height.

Is the Tilt N Tote made in America and what warranty does it carry?

Yes. WheelChair Carrier builds it in Wauseon Ohio from all steel with an e coat and powder finish, and it carries a 3 year transferable limited warranty.

Is Wheelchair Carrier a Good Brand?

WheelChair Carrier has been building vehicle lifts and carriers since 1977 and now has close to five decades of experience in this one product category. The company designs and manufactures its carriers in Wauseon Ohio and the Model 001 wears a Made in the USA badge on its own factory literature. Its manual and electric carriers are stocked by national retailers including U-Haul and by mobility dealers across the country, and the product line has stayed in continuous production for decades because the simple steel tilt design just works. Every carrier is backed by a 3 year transferable limited warranty, which is longer than most import carriers offer and transfers to a new owner if you sell your vehicle setup.
