Quick Overview

The Wheelchair Carrier Hold N Go Model US218 is an American made hitch mounted electric lift that carries a 3 wheel or 4 wheel mobility scooter or powerchair on the back of your vehicle. Flip the switch and the 48 by 28 inch steel platform lowers to the ground, roll the scooter on, and the lift raises it up to 24 inches to travel height. There are no ramps to climb and no heavy lifting at any point.

What sets the Hold N Go apart from its Lift N Go sibling is the automatic hold down arm. As the platform rises, the arm presses down over the scooter deck and clamps the load in place, so you never crank ratchet straps in a parking lot. Ratchets are still included in the box for riders who want a backup tie down, but the arm alone secures most scooters for everyday driving.

The whole unit weighs 95 lb and installs in a Class II or Class III hitch with either a 1 1/4 inch or 2 inch square receiver. A 21 foot wiring harness with a 30 amp resettable circuit breaker connects the lift to your vehicle battery. When you are driving without the scooter, the platform folds itself up into a compact stowaway position so it does not drag or block your view. Wheelchair Carrier backs the frame with a 3 year transferable warranty and the electronics with a 1 year warranty.

How to Purchase & What's Included

How do I get a price for the US218?

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the US218?

Most products in this range do not meet the strict medical device rules that Medicare and Medicaid use, so they rarely qualify for coverage. We do not work with Medicare and we do not bill private insurance directly.

Some private plans will reimburse you outside of the Medicare framework. The best way to find out is to call your insurer and ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Notice to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Medicare pays for equipment only when the supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have one, so Medicare will not pay for anything we sell you. You are personally and fully responsible for payment.

Documentation, Manuals & Safety

Official factory documents for the Hold N Go US218

Key safety notes. Never stand or ride on the platform while it is moving. Confirm your hitch is rated Class II or Class III and that the combined tongue weight of the 95 lb lift plus your scooter stays within your vehicle rating. Wheels smaller than 7 inches need the cradle accessory before loading. Keep the hold down arm engaged whenever the vehicle is moving and check the 30 amp breaker connection after installation.

Daily Operation & Transportation

Daily use is a two step routine. Lower the platform to the ground with the toggle switch, drive or push the scooter onto the deck, then raise it. The hold down arm engages automatically as the platform reaches travel height, so there is nothing to strap or tighten. Unloading is the same in reverse and takes under a minute.

The lift is hardwired to your vehicle battery through the included 21 foot harness, so it never needs separate charging and works even when the scooter battery is dead. A 30 amp resettable circuit breaker protects the circuit. When you drive without a scooter on board the platform automatically folds up into its stowaway position, keeping the back of the vehicle tidy and preserving ground clearance. Because the load rides outside the vehicle, your trunk and cabin space stay free, though you may want a cover for the scooter in heavy weather.

Common Questions

Do I still need ratchet straps with the Hold N Go

No. The automatic hold down arm clamps the scooter deck as the platform rises and secures the load for normal driving. Ratchets are included in the box as an optional backup but they are not required.

What hitch does my vehicle need for the US218

You need a Class II or Class III hitch with a 1 1/4 inch or 2 inch square receiver. The hitch height should fall between 8 and 22 inches from the ground. Remember the lift itself weighs 95 lb, so add your scooter weight when checking your vehicle tongue weight rating.

Will my scooter fit on the platform

The deck measures 48 inches long by 28 inches wide and handles most 3 wheel and 4 wheel travel and mid size scooters up to 350 lb. Scooter wheels must be at least 7 inches tall. Longer scooters up to 62 inches can fit with the optional number 484 cradle extension.

How is the lift powered

The lift hardwires to your vehicle 12 volt battery through the included 21 foot harness with a 30 amp resettable circuit breaker. It draws power only while raising or lowering, and it works even if your scooter battery is completely dead.

What happens to the lift when I drive without the scooter

The platform automatically folds up into a vertical stowaway position when unloaded, so it hugs the back of the vehicle instead of hanging out behind the bumper.

What warranty comes with the Hold N Go

Wheelchair Carrier covers the frame, materials and workmanship for 3 years with a transferable limited warranty, and electronic components such as the motor and actuator for 1 year.

Is Wheelchair Carrier a Good Brand?

Wheelchair Carrier is an Ohio based manufacturer that has built vehicle lifts and carriers for mobility equipment since the late 1970s, and every US218 is fabricated and powder coated in the USA. The company is one of the few in this category that still laser cuts its own platforms, which is why designs like the Patriotic eagle and the Find The Cure ribbon exist at all. A 3 year transferable frame warranty is above the norm for hitch lifts in this price class, and parts plus phone support come straight from the factory rather than an overseas importer. Thousands of these lifts are on American roads through national dealers, which speaks to a design that has been refined over decades rather than a newcomer product.
