Can a Mobility Scooter Go on the Beach? What Works on Sand and What Gets Stuck

The short answer

It depends on the sand. On the hard wet sand near the water, on beach mats and on the paths through the dunes, yes. An all terrain mobility scooter on wide tires handles all of it, and the Afiscooter S4 or S3 on their golf tires and the Cheetah Ninja ADA are the ones we sell most for it.

On soft dry sand above the tide line, no. A regular mobility scooter cannot do it, including the ones sold as all terrain models. Crossing loose sand takes an electric ATV or a true off road wheelchair, and those are gathered on our beach mobility scooters page.

Why a scooter gets stuck in soft sand

Picture a narrow bicycle tire on dry sand. It cuts down instead of rolling over the top. That is what happens to a travel scooter, because its wheels carry all the weight on a strip about the width of your thumb.

Three things decide whether a wheel floats or sinks. Tire width spreads the load. Ground clearance keeps the deck off the sand once a wheel does sink an inch or two. Motor torque keeps the wheel turning when the sand grabs it. An all terrain mobility scooter improves all three, which is why it crosses grass, gravel and packed sand that stops an ordinary scooter.

Loose dry sand beats all three anyway, because it gives way under the tire no matter how wide it is. The only thing that reliably gets a machine out of that is driving more than one pair of wheels, which is where the ATV style quads and the off road wheelchairs come in.

Two kinds of sand

Hard wet sand. Packed down by the tide, and at low tide almost as firm as a dirt road. Ride it with an all terrain scooter, keep moving, turn in wide arcs and stay above the waterline. Ride out and back on the same tide, because the strip that carried you out can be soft three hours later.

Soft dry sand. It behaves like a bag of sugar. This is the sand people mean when they ask whether a scooter can get them down to the water, and it is the reason the honest answer is often no. A machine built for it looks different, sits higher and usually drives every wheel.

For hard wet sand

The Afiscooter S4 and the three wheel S3 are the scooters we point most beach buyers to. Wide golf tires, 5 inches of clearance, suspension at both ends, up to 600 lbs of capacity and 28 to 37 miles on a charge, and they work just as well at the store the rest of the week. The Cheetah Ninja ADA is the value pick, on 6 inch wide turf tires with ATV style shocks and a 500 lb rating.

Neither will cross dry sand, and neither is sold as if it will. They are for the firm strip and the paths.

For soft dry sand

The MIA FOUR X4 is a stand on quad with four wheel drive, 7200W and double wishbone suspension. The two wheel drive FOUR X2 and longer range X2 GT share the same chassis and wheels. All three top out at 25 mph, the US limit.

The EZ-Raider machines have the most ground clearance of anything we sell. The HD4 drives all four wheels through four 1200W motors on 9.5 inches of clearance and folds for the car. The HD2 and LW are the rear wheel drive versions.

If you cannot stand to ride

Three of these are seated. The EZRaider Access is a seated four wheel drive quad with a motor on each wheel, a 375 lb capacity and a frame that folds to 26 inches. The TerrainHopper Overlander puts four driven wheels under a proper seat with 10 inches of clearance and a 35 degree incline rating. The Outrider Coyote 4WD is a full off road wheelchair, quad motor, 22 inch tires and up to 120 miles of range.

Six things to do on beach day

• Ride out and back on the same tide.
• Keep the tires above the waterline. Salt water is the fastest way to ruin a motor.
• Keep moving over soft patches and turn in wide arcs.
• If a wheel spins, stop. Reverse a foot onto the sand you already packed and take a new line.
• Bring water for yourself. Sun and heat are fine for the machine.
• Rinse the frame and wheels with fresh water at home and let everything dry before charging.

Are they allowed on public beaches?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, public beaches, parks and boardwalks must let people with disabilities use wheelchairs anywhere the public can walk. Other power driven mobility devices, which is the category a mobility scooter or an electric quad falls into, must also be allowed unless the operator can show a real safety reason to limit that type of device. In practice most beaches allow them on the firm sand and paths, and some set size, speed or hour rules in busy season. Check the park or town website before you go.

Renting or buying

Beach town rental shops mostly rent standard travel scooters for the boardwalk. None of them rent a sand machine, so renting answers the boardwalk question and not the beach one. If you want to reach the water and you visit more than once or twice a year, buying the right machine is the only route, and the ATV models above are the ones that do it.
