Motorized Platform Carts
Motorized platform carts move heavy loads across a flat warehouse, plant, or stockroom floor without anyone having to push or pull. They are walk-behind, pedestrian-operated flatbeds with a powered drive wheel. One operator walks behind the cart and steers from the handle while the motor does the actual work, which takes the strain off the back and shoulders on a long run.
The Pony Express line at Heavy Duty Mobility runs from a 1,000 lb deck up to a 4,000 lb deck, all built on welded steel frames in the United States. Every platform model runs up to 8 hours on a charge, recharges in about 4 hours, and holds 0 to 3 mph across two speed ranges. The whole line is backed by a 5-year frame and motor warranty.
Center-wheel drive on the 1031 and 1032 turns tight in narrow aisles. The 1040 and 1040-E use front-wheel drive with a thumb throttle, and the 1040-E ships in 5 deck sizes when you need a configurable footprint. Our top pick is the 1031 at 2,000 lb, currently $3,824.
One thing to be clear about is that these carts carry and tow on casters at floor level. They do not lift. If you need to raise a load to a bench or rack, look at our electric scissor lift cart. If you need to tow a string of wheeled carts rather than carry one deck, an electric tugger is the right tool, and we are happy to steer you there.

What is a motorized platform cart

A motorized platform cart is a powered flatbed that a worker walks behind to move heavy loads along a level floor. A 24-volt DC motor drives one wheel set, a thumb or twist throttle controls the speed, and the operator steers from a handle. The deck stays at floor height the whole time, so the cart carries the load horizontally instead of lifting it. You will also see these searched for as a motorized flatbed cart, a powered platform cart, or an electric platform cart. They are all the same machine.
The real point of one is ergonomics. Pushing a loaded manual cart across a long floor is one of the most common sources of back and shoulder strain in a warehouse, which is why OSHA materials-handling pushing and pulling guidance treats sustained push and pull as a recognized injury risk. The motor takes away that sustained push force, so a single operator can move 2,000 to 4,000 lb without straining and without needing a second person on the cart.

Where these carts earn their keep
- Warehouse and stockroom moves where workers would otherwise push or pull heavy loaded carts by hand
- Manufacturing and assembly lines feeding parts and finished goods between stations
- Facilities and maintenance teams hauling equipment, tools, and supplies across large buildings
- Loading dock and shipping areas staging pallets and freight up to 4,000 lb
Pick by weight first. The 1040 handles 1,000 lb loads, the 1031 doubles that to 2,000 lb, and the 1032 carries up to 4,000 lb, all on one charge that lasts a full 8 hour shift.
How much weight can a motorized platform cart carry
Across the Pony Express platform line, decks are rated from 1,000 lb up to 4,000 lb. The smart move is to pick the rating one step above the real load you move every day rather than sizing it right at the edge.
- 1,000 lb – the Pony Express 1040 and the 1040-E. Front-wheel drive, lighter footprint, the entry of the ladder.
- 2,000 lb – the Pony Express 1031, center-wheel drive, our top pick for general warehouse work. Lower-deck variants are rated 1,500 lb.
- 3,000 to 4,000 lb – the Pony Express 1032 Heavy-Duty. The base cart is rated 3,000 lb and a factory upgrade takes it to 4,000 lb. This is the canonical home for the 1032 full spec.
Raphael’s rule of thumb. NIOSH puts the safe sustained push force for one worker at roughly 50 pounds of force. A loaded 2,000 lb cart on good casters can still need 80 to 120 pounds to keep moving on a long run, and that is exactly the load that hurts people over the course of a shift. Size the deck one capacity step above your daily load and let the motor carry it. A 2,000 lb cart that usually hauls 1,200 lb will last longer and steer better than a 1,000 lb cart you run at the limit every day.
Center-wheel drive or front-wheel drive
Center-wheel drive turns tighter. On the 1031 and the 1032, the powered wheel sits at the center of the chassis, so the cart pivots in a shorter radius and holds a line in a narrow aisle. The 1040 and 1040-E use front-wheel drive with a two-speed thumb throttle, which is simpler and lighter for 1,000 lb loads in more open space. If your aisles are tight, lean toward the 1031. If you move lighter loads in open dock or staging areas, the 1040 family is the cheaper fit.
Can I get a custom or configurable deck size
Yes. The 1040-E ships in 5 deck sizes, which makes it the configurable platform cart in the range when your load footprint does not match a standard deck. The 1031 also comes in small, medium, large, and extra-wide decks, from a 40-inch length up to a 52-inch by 34.5-inch heavy-duty top. If you need a deck dimension that is not on the spec sheet, call us before you order and we will confirm what the factory can build.
Carry, tow, or lift – which cart do I actually need
These platform carts carry a deck load on casters and can tow a light trailing load, but they do not lift and they are not tow tractors. The trick is matching the job to the right machine.
- Carry a load on a deck – a motorized platform cart. That is this page.
- Raise a load to bench or rack height – the 1050-EL electric scissor lift cart, which lifts 1,000 lb from 18.5 inches up to 64 inches.
- Pull a train of wheeled carts – a heavy-duty electric tugger rated 5,000 to 7,500 lb, or the wider electric tugger range.
- Pick orders down an aisle with totes and shelves – the motorized stock picking cart.
We do not sell ride-on tow tractors, AGVs, or autonomous carts. If your operation needs ride-on long-distance towing, that is a different category, and we are glad to point you toward it.
What do these carts cost
Current sale pricing on the platform line runs from $3,446 for the 1040 up to $7,352 for the 1032 at the 4,000 lb upgrade. The 1031 at 2,000 lb sits in the middle at $3,824 on sale against a $4,581 regular price. Prices move with manufacturer changes, so check the live product page for the figure on the day you buy. Every platform model is backed by the Pony Express 5-year frame and motor warranty and a 21-day manufacturer demo program.
Battery, runtime, and charging
All four platform carts run a deep-cycle AGM battery with an onboard UL and cUL listed smart charger that plugs into a standard 120 or 240 VAC outlet. Runtime is up to 8 hours on a charge and a full recharge takes about 4 hours, so a cart charged overnight covers a full shift. Speed is governed at 0 to 1.5 mph in low and 0 to 3 mph in high, which keeps a loaded cart controllable indoors. Regenerative braking and an automatic holding brake stop the cart and hold it on a slope without the operator having to ride the throttle.
Frequently asked questions
What is the heaviest motorized platform cart Heavy Duty Mobility sells?
The Pony Express 1032 Heavy-Duty platform cart. The base model is rated 3,000 lb and a factory upgrade takes the same chassis to 4,000 lb. It uses center-wheel drive and a 52-inch by 34.5-inch deck.
Do motorized platform carts work outdoors?
They are built for level indoor and dock floors. The 5-year frame and motor warranty excludes outdoor use, and the controlled 0 to 3 mph speed and non-marking foam-filled tires are tuned for finished concrete. For graded outdoor terrain, talk to us first about whether a different machine fits.
How long does the battery last on a charge?
Up to 8 hours of operation per charge across the platform line, with a recharge of about 4 hours on the onboard 120 or 240 VAC smart charger. A cart plugged in overnight is ready for a full shift the next morning.
What is the difference between the 1040 and the 1040-E?
Both are rated 1,000 lb on front-wheel drive. The 1040 ships as a single standard deck at a lower price, currently $3,446 on sale. The 1040-E adds a two-speed thumb throttle, a 44 Ah AGM battery, and 5 selectable deck sizes for a configurable footprint, currently $4,212 on sale.
Is there a warranty on Pony Express platform carts?
Yes. All four platform models carry a 5-year frame and motor warranty and qualify for the 21-day manufacturer demo program. The 2-year warranty that applies to the mailroom cart and the scissor-lift cart does not apply to the platform line.
