What counts as a compact electric tugger?

A compact electric tugger is a walk-behind tow unit with a small frame footprint, rated for loads up to roughly 2,000 lb, built to work in the aisles and doorways where larger machines cannot turn. The two compact units in the Pony Express line are the 1061-HD and the 1062. Both tow up to 2,000 lb on a flat floor, both run center-wheel drive for a tight turning radius, and both are pedestrian operated. An operator walks behind the unit and steers with a tiller, which means there is no cab and no ride-on platform eating up your floor space.

The size class matters because the real limit on a compact tugger is footprint and turning circle, not raw pulling power. A 1061-HD will start and tow a 2,000 lb cart train across a smooth concrete floor without breaking a sweat. What it will not do is replace a 6,500 lb heavy-duty unit, and it was never meant to. You pick compact when the constraint is the building, not the weight.

How much can a compact tugger actually move?

Both stocked compact models are rated to tow up to 2,000 lb on a flat surface. That is the manufacturer rating on a level floor with wheeled carts in good condition. Ramps, soft casters, cold concrete, and worn wheel bearings all eat into usable capacity, so size with some headroom rather than loading to the exact number.

Keep in mind that the 2,000 lb rating is a tow rating, not a lift rating. A compact tugger moves loads horizontally on their own casters. If a load needs to come off the ground, that is a different machine entirely. For loads above 2,000 lb, the heavy-duty electric tuggers start at 5,000 lb and run to 7,500 lb. And if you need to carry loads on a deck rather than tow them, the motorized platform carts handle up to 4,000 lb.

1061-HD vs 1062, which compact tugger fits your floor?

Pick the 1061-HD if you want an adjustable-length unit you can shorten for storage. It telescopes from 39 to 54 inches and measures 24.5 inches wide, and it comes with multiple hitch options from a pintle hook to a ball coupler, so it mates to whatever your carts already use. At $5,452 it is our top compact pick and the cheaper of the two. It also takes a 40 Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate battery upgrade, which suits facilities that charge between shifts and want a lighter, acid-free pack.

Pick the 1062 if you run longer shifts and want extra battery on board. The 1062 ships with a 35 Ah AGM battery and offers a 70 Ah AGM upgrade, double the standard capacity, for operations that cannot stop to recharge mid-shift. It runs a fixed 25 inch body, 24 inches wide, on foam-filled non-marking tires, with regenerative braking and an automatic holding brake. Why power a small tugger instead of pushing the cart by hand?

Manual pushing has a ceiling, and it is a lot lower than most people think. NIOSH guidance on manual material handling puts the sustained push force a worker can apply safely at well under what it takes to start a loaded cart rolling. A 2,000 lb cart on tired casters can demand an initial push force far above that limit, and that is exactly how warehouses end up with back, shoulder, and knee injuries from a task that looks routine. A compact electric tugger does the starting and stopping force for you, so one operator moves what used to take two people leaning into a cart.

The other reason is control. Both compact units run 0 to 1.5 mph on the low setting and 0 to 3 mph on the high setting, with regenerative braking and an automatic holding brake. That gives you smooth starts, controlled stops, and no rollaway on a slight grade.
