Quick Overview

Maintenance work in a big plant means walking a loaded tool chest a long way before any work gets done. A motorized tool cart from Electro Kinetic Technologies takes that push out of the day. The tools ride on a powered cart that the technician walks alongside, which matters most in large facilities and on campuses where the trip between the shop and the job is measured in minutes rather than steps, and it removes the repeated pushing and pulling of heavy cabinets that wears people out and causes strains.

There are three ways EK Tech builds one. The casters can come off your existing manual tool cart so the cart body mounts directly onto a Pony Express motorized platform cart of a suitable size. A tool cabinet or a workbench can be mounted onto a motorized platform cart from the start. Or an EK Tech retrofit kit can motorize a manual tool cart that your team already knows and likes. All three keep the tools and the drawer layout your technicians are used to.

Two things are worth thinking about before the cart is specified. EK Tech suggests choosing a cart larger than the tool chest itself so there is room on the deck for parts, fittings and whatever else the job needs. And the deck height that a tool cabinet mounts to is about 12 inches above the floor, which usually raises the top of the cabinet by a few inches compared with the casters it sat on before, so the top drawer and work surface end up a little higher than the crew is used to.

From there the build is yours. Payload capacity is scalable, decks can be made longer to take bigger chests, and controls can be side mounted, wireless, on a pendant or at dual stations. Frames are available in stainless steel and aluminum, and EK Tech will add your branding, color, logo, labeling and operator manuals. Collision detect systems watch for obstacles in the travel zone, dual independent center wheel drives handle heavy loads that also need to turn sharply, an automatic retractable drive turns the cart into a towable trailer, converters can power off board equipment, and lithium iron phosphate batteries are available. Every tool cart is quoted to your build. Also see the Pony Express utility cart and the Pony Express 1031 platform cart.

Can EK Tech use the tool chest we already have?

Yes, and that is the usual route. The casters come off your manual tool cart and the body mounts onto a Pony Express motorized platform cart of a suitable size. A tool cabinet or workbench can be mounted the same way, or an EK Tech retrofit kit can motorize the manual cart itself so your crew keeps the drawer layout they know.

Will the cabinet sit higher than it does on casters?

A little. The deck a tool cabinet mounts to is about 12 in above the floor, which typically raises the overall level of the cabinet by a few inches compared with the height it had on casters alone. It is worth checking that against any bench or machine your technicians work beside.

How much will a motorized tool cart carry?

Payload capacity is scalable and it comes from the platform cart chosen underneath the chest. EK Tech does not publish a single rating for the tool cart line, so we take the weight of your loaded chest and anything else riding on the deck to the factory and the engineering team confirms the cart size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we have to buy new tool chests?

No. The most common build takes the casters off the manual tool cart you already own and mounts the body onto a Pony Express motorized platform cart. A tool cabinet or workbench can be mounted the same way, and an EK Tech retrofit kit can motorize an existing manual cart outright.

How much can the cart carry?

Payload capacity is scalable and comes from the platform cart underneath. EK Tech does not publish a single figure for the tool cart line, so tell us the weight of the loaded chest and anything else that rides on the deck and the factory sizes the cart for it.

Will my drawers end up too high to use?

A tool cabinet mounts to a deck about 12 inches above the floor, so the whole cabinet usually sits a few inches higher than it did on casters. For most crews that is fine, but it is worth measuring against the benches and machines they work beside before the cart is built.

Can one cart carry more than just the tool chest?

Yes, and EK Tech recommends it. Customers often order a cart larger than the chest so there is deck space left for parts, fittings and the rest of the job kit. Longer decks are a standard customization on this line.
