Short answer. No scooter is sold as a “left-handed” model, but you have two real options. Order one that places the throttle on your left, like the Afiscooter S and C series, which can also be driven with a foot pedal. Or pick any wig-wag scooter, which either hand can operate. Our picks and the full how-to are below.
Why trust this guide. Heavy Duty Mobility is a US-based mobility retailer, and for over 15 years we have helped riders find and configure the right setup. We order and configure these scooters for real customers, including left-hand throttles and foot-pedal acceleration, and we back them with US parts, service, and warranty. The specifications here come from the manufacturers’ own manuals. If you are not sure which setup fits your hand strength or range of motion, talk to our specialists or your occupational therapist, and we will build the scooter around your ability. Always test a new control layout in a safe, open space before heading out.
How mobility scooter controls actually work
A delta tiller is the wraparound, loop-shaped handlebar. You rest your hand on it and reach the throttle with that same hand, so it is one-handed by nature.
A wig-wag throttle is a single rocker lever that sits across the tiller. You press one side to go forward and the other to reverse. Because it spans the center, either thumb can work it. This is the feature that makes a scooter usable for a one-handed or left-handed rider with no modification.

A twist grip or one-sided thumb lever sits on the right handlebar only. It is the least flexible option for a left-handed rider, and it is most common on the cheapest imported scooters.
Most riders do not need the steering moved, because you steer the whole tiller. What you really need is the throttle on the correct side, or a throttle either hand can reach.

Scooters with true left-hand controls
The Afiscooter line from Afikim, supported from their US base in Daytona Beach, Florida, is the standout. On the S models you can ask for the throttle lever on the left when you order. On the C3 and C4 a dealer sets the controls up for the left hand. This is a genuine left-hand control, not a workaround.
- The all-terrain Afiscooter S4 and the 3-wheel Afiscooter S3 have a delta tiller and a wig-wag throttle, with left placement available on request.
- The comfort-class Afiscooter C4 and C3 have a delta tiller with dealer-configured left-hand controls.
Just tell us before you order and we set the throttle up on your side.

Built around your ability, with fully adaptive controls
This is where the Afiscooter line stands apart. You are not limited to choosing a side, you can change how the scooter is driven.
Drive with your foot. The Afiscooter S can be ordered with a foot accelerator pedal. A switch on the tiller lets you choose foot-pedal driving or the standard hand throttle, and the pedal can be set for your left or right foot. If you have little or no use of a hand for the throttle, you steer the tiller and accelerate with your foot. The pedal is fitted at the factory before delivery, so just tell us when you order.

Choose your throttle. The hand control can be a wig-wag lever or a twist lever, placed on your left or your right. We set it up for your working hand before it ships.
Braking stays simple and safe. You never give up a control to brake. The Afiscooter slows and holds itself the moment you release the throttle or lift off the pedal, and it has a separate emergency brake lever and a manual handbrake as backup. Foot-pedal driving still leaves you with full, independent braking.
The best scooters for one-handed driving
These do not relocate the control, but their wig-wag throttle works comfortably with either hand, which is all most one-handed riders need.

- The Enhance Mobility Mojo is auto-folding, with a true delta tiller and a wig-wag throttle. Our top pick for a lightweight folder you can run with one hand.
- The Shoprider Explorer is a mid-size 4-wheel with a full C-type delta loop tiller and a wig-wag throttle.
- The Merits Pioneer 9 and 10 are heavy-duty, with a delta tiller, a wig-wag throttle, and a strong US parts network.
- The Merits Yoga S542 is a folding travel scooter with a confirmed wig-wag lever, good for one-handed driving in a small package.
- The EV Rider Transport 4M is a folding travel scooter sold with an ambidextrous throttle for either hand, and the 4-wheel EV Rider Nomad pairs a loop tiller with a wig-wag throttle.
- The Forcemech Pathmate is an ultra-light folder with a tiller and a wig-wag throttle, from a US brand.
Scooters we do not recommend for one-handed use, and why
Being honest about this matters, so here is what to skip if you can only use one hand.
Twist-grip scooters like the GIO Golf use a throttle built into the right handlebar. It cannot be moved to the left or held steadily while you also steer.
Stand-up and ATV-style models such as the CycleBoard, EZRaider, and MIA SPYQE are ridden standing, with two hands on the bar and body balance for steering. They are not built for one-handed seated use.
Two-handed handlebar models like the Cheetah Ninja can have the twist throttle set to either side, but the wide handlebar still needs two hands to steer, so they do not suit a one-handed rider.

Frequently asked questions
Is there such a thing as a left-handed mobility scooter?
Not as a separate product. The real solutions are a scooter that lets you place the throttle on the left, like the Afiscooter line, or a wig-wag scooter that either hand can operate.
Are there mobility scooters with left hand controls?
Yes. The Afiscooter S can be built with the throttle on the left when you order, and the Afiscooter C3 and C4 can have left-hand controls set up by a dealer.
Can you drive a mobility scooter with one hand?
Yes. Any wig-wag scooter is built for it. You steer the tiller and press the lever with the same hand.
What is a wig-wag throttle?
It is a single rocker lever across the tiller. One side is forward, the other is reverse, and either thumb can reach it.
What is a delta tiller?
A delta tiller is the wraparound, loop-shaped handlebar found on most full-size scooters. Its shape lets you hold the bar and reach the throttle with the same hand, which makes one-handed driving easy.
Can you accelerate a mobility scooter with your foot?
Yes, on the Afiscooter S. You can order a foot accelerator pedal, and a switch on the tiller lets you choose foot or hand control. It is helpful if neither hand can hold a throttle.
Can the throttle be moved to the left side?
On the Afiscooter S you specify left placement when you order. On the C3 and C4 a dealer configures it. Most other brands keep the lever in place, but their wig-wag already works from the left.
Which mobility scooter is best after a stroke or with use of one side?
If you want the control on your stronger side, choose an Afiscooter set up for that hand, or add foot-pedal acceleration. If either hand can manage a lever, any wig-wag scooter like the Enhance Mojo or Shoprider Explorer works well. Ask our team and we will match the setup to your ability.
If you would rather drive with a joystick than a tiller, a power wheelchair is one-handed by design. See our companion guide to left-hand control electric wheelchairs.
