Electric ATVs for Adults, Street to Trail

An electric ATV for adults does two jobs a gas quad never could. It gets you across town without waking the street, and it gets you off the pavement afterwards without a fuel can rolling around the truck bed. Touch the throttle and it pulls from a standstill, quietly enough to ride at six in the morning and quick enough to keep up with city traffic. At the light end that means a three wheel stand up deck a student can carry up a stairwell, and at the heavy end a four wheel drive machine rated to carry 440 lbs of rider and gear up a fire road. If you have gone looking for an electric quad for adults and found nothing but kids ride-on toys, this is the grown up version of that.

We sell these to people riding to work, to students crossing a campus in the time it takes to find a parking space, and to the same riders again at the weekend on fire roads, beach paths and hunting ground at first light. Every machine here is a stand up deck as standard rather than a sit astride quad, which takes a moment to get used to and then makes sense, because you can step straight off when the ground turns ugly instead of riding it out. Most fold down small enough to live in a hallway or a trunk, which matters more in an apartment than any spec on the sheet.

The tradeoff across the range is weight against capability. The CycleBoard Rover sits at the light end at $2,499, 68 lbs without its battery and 25 mph flat out, which is plenty of machine for most first time buyers. Step up to the MIA FOUR X4 four wheel drive at $8,450 and you get 7200W split across four driven wheels and a 30 degree climbing rating, though you also get 110 lbs to lift and load every time you go out. The EZ-Raider off road lineup tops the range at $19,700, with 9.5 inches of ground clearance and a 440 lb rider and gear rating on the HD4, and at 280 lbs it is the heaviest thing on this page by some margin. If distance matters to you more than muscle, the MIA FOUR X2 GT is rated up to 62.5 miles per charge.

Most of what gets sold as an electric ATV sits between $400 and $1,500 on a 500W motor, and those machines disappoint a grown adult inside a season. Not one of these belongs in that company. The eleven here run from $2,499 to $19,700, the entry machine runs 1800W, and the one at the top drives all four wheels with 4800W behind it.

What an adult electric ATV has to clear before it counts as off road

Most rides end on a rock nobody saw coming, which is why we start with ground clearance and treat the top speed figure as decoration. Sustained output with a full grown adult standing on the deck matters nearly as much, followed by how much suspension travel the machine has to work with. On clearance, only the EZ-Raider machines put a figure in writing at 8.4 in, 9.4 in and 9.5 in. CycleBoard and MIA publish nothing, so you will not get a number from us either.

The rider limits below are where we see people come unstuck. A 250 lb ceiling sounds generous until you add boots, a pack and a rifle, and at that point half the range has quietly ruled itself out.

CycleBoard quotes its weights with the battery out of the machine, so the number you end up carrying is higher than the one printed. Only the three CycleBoard machines can be bought straight from the site as well. The MIA and EZ-Raider models are call to order with freight worked out per order, and the EZ-Raider machines sit outside free shipping altogether.

Stand up off road electric scooters versus four wheel quads

Every machine here is ridden standing, which surprises people expecting a sit astride quad. As a category it sits between a stand up electric scooter and a quad, borrowing the deck from one and the wheels from the other. A three wheel electric scooter for adults like the CycleBoard Rover steers by leaning, quick on hardpack and tiring over a long rough day. A four wheel platform like the CycleBoard X-Quad 3000 adds a second axle and independent suspension on each corner, which stops a rut ending the ride. If you want to sit, only the MIA SPYQE, SPYQE GT, FOUR X2 and FOUR X2 GT offer an optional seat post and saddle.

Only two electric ATV 4×4 models here drive all four wheels

Buyers assume a four wheel chassis means four driven wheels, and on nine of these eleven it does not. Seven of them put power through two wheels only, which will strand you in loose sand and will not cost you a thing on a gravel track. The exceptions are the MIA FOUR X4 four wheel drive quad at $8,450 and the EZ-Raider HD4 folding off road quad at $19,700. The Rover is a three wheeler and neither it nor the Golf Caddy publishes a driven wheel count.

How much motor power a full grown adult rider needs

Output across the eleven varies by a factor of four, and that gap shows up on exactly one kind of ride, the long climb that a smaller motor runs out of puff halfway up.

CycleBoard Rover 1800W

EZ-Raider LW and HD2 2400W total

CycleBoard X-Quad and Golf Caddy 3000W peak

MIA FOUR X2 and X2 GT 3600W peak

EZ-Raider HD4 4800W total

MIA FOUR X4 7200W

For most riding this matters less than the numbers suggest. A 200 lb rider on flat gravel is well served by anything from 1800W up, and spending more will not make that particular ride any better. Watts start to count when the problems stack up on each other, which means a loaded pack on a 20 percent grade over soft ground all at the same time. That combination is the whole argument for the 4800W and 7200W machines. If it does not describe your riding, spend the difference on range or on a lighter machine you will actually load up and take out.

Riding one in a city, and what actually matters there

Plenty of these never see a trail during the week. As a commuter electric scooter the specs that matter flip around completely. Folded size decides whether the machine lives in your hallway or your building bike room, weight decides whether you can get it up a flight of stairs, and top speed matters far less than most buyers expect, because you will be sitting behind traffic either way.

The MIA machines are the ones we point city riders at first. They fold to 17.3 in or 17.7 in and weigh 81 lbs to 110 lbs, so two people can lift one into a trunk, and the SPYQE GT covers 50 miles on a charge which is two weeks of commuting for most people. The CycleBoard Rover is the easiest to live with at 68 lbs, which is also why it is the one we recommend most often as an electric scooter for college students, though its 250 lb rider limit is the lowest here and worth checking against your weight plus a loaded backpack. The EZ-Raider machines are the wrong tool for a city at 205 lbs to 280 lbs, and they are built for ground that a city does not have.

Two things kill street orders more than any spec. Local rules put a machine like this in a gray area in most states and the answer changes by city, so the phone call to check is worth making before you order rather than after. And charging beats most people, because a machine that has to go up to a third floor apartment on your shoulder is a machine you will stop riding by the second month.

Folding, weight and getting it to the trailhead

Adult electric quad folded down flat for car transport

This is the spec buyers overlook at the point of order and regret on the first weekend out. The MIA machines fold to 17.3 in or 17.7 in and weigh 81 lbs to 110 lbs, which two people will get into an SUV without much trouble. The EZ-Raider machines fold to 25 in, 27.5 in and 29 in, but they weigh 205 lbs to 280 lbs, so plan on a ramp and a truck bed rather than the trunk of a car.

What the money buys from $2,499 to $19,700

There are three real steps in that ladder rather than eleven, and knowing where they fall saves a lot of money.

CycleBoard Rover $2,499

MIA SPYQE $3,495

MIA SPYQE GT $3,995

CycleBoard X-Quad $4,295

CycleBoard X-Quad Golf Caddy $4,499

MIA FOUR X2 $5,950

MIA FOUR X2 GT $6,450

MIA FOUR X4 $8,450

EZ-Raider LW $11,375

EZ-Raider HD2 $15,900

EZ-Raider HD4 $19,700

The first jump, $2,499 to about $4,300, buys a second axle, four wheel independent suspension and 100 lbs more rider limit. The second, into the $5,950 to $8,450 MIA band, buys folding transport at 17.7 in, up to 7200W and true four wheel drive. The last jump into EZ-Raider territory buys published ground clearance, disc brakes on all four wheels and rider limits up to 440 lbs. It also buys 280 lbs of machine and a freight bill.

What we ask people on the phone

Rider limit comes first, because your weight plus the gear you carry knocks most of the list out on its own. Then we ask whether you want to stand or sit, since only four of the MIA models take an optional seat and everything else here is a standing deck. Transport is the third question, as folded height and machine weight decide between a trunk, a truck bed and a trailer. Drive type comes last rather than first, which catches people out, but four driven wheels only start earning their price once you are on sand or mud.

Rider limit
Your weight plus gear removes most of the list straight away.
Standing or seated
Only four MIA models offer an optional seat post and saddle.
Transport
Folded height and weight decide car, truck bed or trailer.
Drive type
Four driven wheels earn their price on sand and mud, not on gravel.

Buyers who have already settled on a brand will find the full ranges on our CycleBoard three wheel and four wheel platforms, MIA Dynamics and EZ-Raider four wheel machine pages. For everyone else, every electric ATV for sale here carries its price openly, and a phone call costs nothing. We are just as happy talking you out of the wrong machine as into the right one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast do these go?

From 24 mph on the EZ-Raider LW to 45 mph on the MIA FOUR X4. The MIA SPYQE pair is built to 32 mph and the FOUR X2 pair to 45+ mph, but US units are limited by law to 25 mph.

How far can I ride on one charge?

Between 30 and 62.5 miles across the models as listed. The Rover and the EZ-Raider LW are rated at 30 miles, and the Rover reaches 40 with the 19.2Ah battery. The MIA FOUR X2 GT is rated up to 62.5. Those are maximums, so rough ground, cold weather and a heavy rider all cost range.

Is an electric quad bike the same as an electric ATV?

Not on this page. An electric quad bike usually means a sit astride four wheeler with a saddle. Every machine here is ridden standing on a deck, with an optional seat on four MIA models only.

Is an electric quad for adults the same thing as an electric 4 wheeler for adults?

People use both phrases for the same machine, and on this page they both mean a four wheel electric platform rated for a full grown rider rather than a child. What separates ours from most of what turns up under those searches is the rider limit and the motor. Nothing here is rated below 250 lbs, and the four wheel drive models run 4800W and 7200W.

What is the weight limit?

250 lbs on the CycleBoard Rover at the bottom, 440 lbs on the EZ-Raider HD4 at the top. The Golf Caddy is 275 lbs, the two SPYQE models 266 lbs, the FOUR X2 pair 300 lbs, the FOUR X4 330 lbs, the X-Quad 350 lbs and the LW 375 lbs. Count your gear.

Can these handle mud, sand and steep trails?

Soft sand and deep mud want driven wheels at both ends, which narrows it to the MIA FOUR X4 and EZ-Raider HD4. The FOUR X4 is rated to a 30 degree incline and the CycleBoard models to a 30 percent grade.

Is a street legal electric scooter the same as one of these?

Assume no until you have checked. Rules vary by state and city, usually on top speed, motor power and registration. The US MIA units are speed limited by law to 25 mph for that reason.

Are electric ATVs good for hunting?

Electric drive is quiet, which is the obvious argument. The practical one is range and load. The EZ-Raider HD4 carries 440 lbs of rider and gear, runs 50 miles per charge and has 9.5 in of ground clearance. The MIA FOUR X4 does it for $8,450 with a 330 lb limit.
