A Look at the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9
Mobility devices come in a range of style and features, but time and time again, Merits has proven to provide slim designed models ideal for outdoor and indoor use. The 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 is the ideal heavy duty 3-wheel mobility scooter for those who want more than just a way to get from one place to another. The device is rated for gradients of up to 12 degrees, so inclines are rarely a problem and the powerful 24V DC motor offers exceptional rear wheel power at all times. A full range of 32 miles ensures you never run out of power during your busy day and the dual 12V batteries assist in powering all necessary safety features including lights, turning signals, and a loud horn. The small turning radius of just 50” enables the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter to be an exceptional companion for your grocery needs and the larger than average tires grip multiple surfaces for ideal use in the great outdoors. The Pioneer 9 is a truly heavy duty mobility scooter with the ability to carry up to 500lbs at a swift 8mph. Anti-tip wheels help the device remain stable even on uneven surfaces, so you can travel with confidence on every outing. The Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter will allow you to maintain your independence without compromise. Additionally, easy controls and an ergonomic design allow virtually anyone to pilot the device effortlessly.Comfort Where It Counts
When traveling in a full size mobility scooter, comfort matters. This is especially true when your mobility device is capable of up to 32 miles at 8mph like the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter. The Pioneer 9 features a fully adjustable, swivel captain’s chair with swing-up armrests that make loading and unloading from the mobility device easy. Not only is the chair made to be convenient, but orthopedic rated to provide optimal support on even the longest of journeys. Once seated onboard the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9, the driver has the ability to adjust the tiller to their personal preference. One hand adjustment of the tiller allows you to put it at the exact angle that is most comfortable for you. Along the journey, easy reach controls and an ergonomic design allow you to pilot the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 without tiring from strain. A fun and comfortable ride is what you can expect from the Pioneer 9.Indoor Rated – Ideal for Tight Spaces
Often, full size mobility devices can be cumbersome to contend with indoors. Small spaces, such as hallways offer little ability to turn around and the driver is often forced to back out of these areas. That can be dangerous and completely uncomfortable. The Pioneer 9 is a 3-wheel mobility device. The rear wheel drive configuration and the single front, swivel wheel offers a solution to the problem and the 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 turns around in just 50”, so whether you are going to the store or using the device around the home (as long as you have a large home), the Pioneer 9 is always available. Just because the Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter is rated for indoors does not mean it is incapable of performing outside. Although it is not a true all-terrain mobility device, it does maintain larger than average pneumatic tires that expertly grip the ground on a variety of terrains. Are There Ample Safety Features?
Yes. Onboard the Pioneer 9, drivers enjoy an array of safety features including a bright headlight for night driving or driving in dimly lit areas. There is also a blinker and horn system standard. For your personal safety, the tiller houses a USB port for charging your device, so you never feel alone no matter how long you stay out.Specifications

How fast does the Merits Pioneer 9 go?
At full speed, you can reach 8 mph top speed.
If a faster top speed is important to you, please check out our collection of recreational mobility scooters, pre-selected for faster speeds.
How long do the Merits Pioneer 9 batteries last per charge? How many years of use can I get out of the batteries?
Battery running time per charge is measured in miles as opposed to time i.e. how many miles can a fully charged set of batteries take the scooter?
The answer depends on the user’s weight as well as the kind of terrain the scooter is operated upon.
Please take these manufacturer figures with a grain of salt, bearing in mind manufacturers may test their scooters in optimum conditions you won’t find in real life.
For a Merits Pioneer 9 3-Wheel scooter, the batteries last: 32 miles.
The lifetime of your Merits Pioneer 9 batteries is approximately 2 years, but very much depends on how much you use your scooter and whether you take good care of your batteries.
The cost of replacing a set of Merits Pioneer 9 batteries is approximately $429
What kind of batteries are used in the Merits Pioneer 9?
This mobility scooter uses sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries. These batteries are maintenance free, meaning you don’t need to add water to them or anything like that.
They happily stay under their shroud for the duration of their lifetime and you shouldn’t need to do anything to them at all.
Lithium-ion batteries are not used, primarily due to cost. With batteries expiring after 2-3 years, the cost of replacing lithium batteries for a machine this size would run into several thousand dollars, vs. gel-cell which is more around the $500 mark.
Will the Merits Pioneer 9 seat fit me?
This scooter’s seat width is 22”.
This is a great seat size for most people and is more generous than most standard/travel mobility scooters.
If in doubt, we recommend measuring a chair in your house that you're comfortable on, to compare sizes.
How much weight can the Merits Pioneer 9 carry?
What kind of ground clearance does the Merits Pioneer 9 have? Is it good for paths and trails?
The 3-Wheel Merits Pioneer 9 has 4 inches of ground clearance. It will cope on grass, gravel and dirt paths, but there are other mobility scooters which would perform better in this area.
Explore our all-terrain mobility scooter collection.
How big is the Merits Pioneer 9? Will it fit indoors and how sharp does it turn?
The Merits Pioneer 9 is fine for indoor use, provided you have a large home. Three-wheeled models are better at turning in tight spaces than 4 wheeled models.
If you have a compact home, contact us to see if this could work.
This scooter will work in commercial indoor settings such as stores and supermarkets.
The turning radius of the Merits Pioneer 9 is 50”.

Why are there such long lead times on some mobility scooters?
My Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter is showing a long lead time above. Why should I buy a scooter now if in any case I won’t get it right away?
Unfortunately, the way things are nowadays, with delays across the entire supply chain, if you wait until there is no lead time on your scooter, you might end up waiting forever. As soon as new stock comes in, it is assigned to orders that were already placed, sometimes weeks in advance. We don’t know how soon the situation will get better - and it may actually get worse before getting better again.
For this reason, customers are placing their orders as soon as they are able, to be placed on the list for as soon as the next scooters are ready to ship.

Daily Operation & Transportation
Daily Operation
Is the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter easy to drive? How does acceleration work? How does braking work?
The Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter is super easy to drive and control.
Remember, this is a scooter which was designed from scratch for seniors and those with disabilities. It takes into account that you might have slower reaction times and has automatic braking whenever you let go of the throttle.
It also features slow-speed mode for confined areas or whilst you’re building up your driving skills and want to go a little slower.
Acceleration/reverse is achieved by a lever in the handlebars, and braking is automatic when you let go of the brakes.
Due to the safety automatic brakes which kick in every time you let go of the throttle, your driving might seem a little jerky at first, but most people catch on very quickly and learn to use the throttle and brakes in a way that gives a smooth ride.
I only have use of my left hand. Can the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter work for left handed users? Can the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter be operated with one hand?
This scooter uses wig-wag throttle acceleration, meaning you can control it with one hand, without any modifications needed.
Can I ride the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter in the rain, snow, wind and hot sun?
- Rain: It’s OK and safe if you get caught in the rain once in a while, or go through an occasional puddle, but you should try to avoid a trip if you know it’s going to rain.
- Snow and ice: We cannot take responsibility for using the scooter in these kinds of weather conditions.
- Cold weather: Fine, though it does negatively impact the battery health and lifetime.
- Wind: Generally not an issue unless very strong winds that could tip the scooter over. If you have a mobility scooter with a canopy, remember, very strong winds can act as a sail to tip over your scooter.
- Hot sun: No issue as far as the scooter is concerned. Remember to take along ample hydration!
Do the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter batteries need maintenance?
This mobility scooter uses maintenance-free batteries which do not need any care until they die, after around 2 years of use.
How often should my Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter be inspected?

Call us 1-888-233-5563 to get details on a local technician in your area.

Please contact us for more details at [xyz-ihs snippet="Live-Chat-three"]
I don’t have a large enough vehicle to transport the Merits Pioneer 9 mobility scooter. What are my options?
- Electric lift: The most common solution is to purchase a platform-style vehicle lift, which sits on your trailer hitch.
If you don’t have a trailer hitch on your vehicle, you’ll need to have one installed. The platform lowers right down to road level, you ride the scooter onto the platform, secure the scooter with provided straps and then activate a lift which raises the platform a few feet off the ground. You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.
Explore our electric lifts collection.
- Manual Platform: Like an electric lift, this has a platform which sits on your trailer hitch, but this platform does not rise and decened, instead, it has a built-in ramp which flips out, allowing you to roll the scooter up onto the platform.
You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.
Explore our collection of manual platforms.
- Scooter trailer: This is a full-fledged trailer on its own wheels, which attaches to your trailer hitch.
There is just one company that designs and produces a trailer specifically for mobility scooters, or you can just get any generic trailer whose specifications match the S4 in terms of weight and dimensions.

Allison Warren –
Nice scooter as it rides and turns good. Works for inside and outside which is what I told the rep I absolutely needed. But shame it only comes in red – blue (my favorite color) was out of stock when I ordered.
Bernie Atkins –
Would also prefer a digital screen but I’m managing without. Nice little scooter could do with more features. I guess the main thing is it runs well which it does and I’m enjoying my extra mobility.
Kelly Sinclair –
I was scared about this Pioneer tipping over as it only has one wheel upfront. But I needed to buy is otherwise it would be too big to turn. Anyway it turned out well and doesn’t tip even when on a slant.
Jackie Metzger –
I was taken care of very well by the staff at Heavy Duty Mobility. The scooter performs well, it hold all my weigh, not saying how much that it but above average! I wish I could carry it, it’s too heavy for that.
Geraldine Miller –
The battery life is impressive, I only have to charge it every so often. I wish it went a touch faster but that is a minor bug that I can deal with.
Doris Smith –
This is a really nice chair. I had the oxygen tank holder and armrest bags installed to make it easier for me to get around for longer periods of time. This was a great buy.
Floyd –
This chair is a game changer for me. I have suffered with leg issues for a while and struggle to walk long distances, so this scooter has been a blessing to rely on daily.
