How fast does the Afiscooter S3 go?

At full speed, you can reach 9.3 mph top speed. In the options & upgrades section, you can add a speed upgrade which will allow speeds of up to 11 mph. Afiscooter S models have a half speed setting, for confined areas, and a full speed setting for when you want to go fast. You will find some other brands offer scooters that go faster than this, however high quality brands put a high emphasis on safety too. In order for a mobility scooter to go faster than around 10 mph, heavy investment must be made to ensure it stays just as safe. For this reason, the more reputable and safe a brand, the more they cap the top speed of their mobility scooters.

How long do the Afiscooter S3 batteries last per charge? How many years of use can I get out of the batteries?

Battery running time per charge is measured in miles as opposed to time i.e. how many miles can a fully charged set of batteries take the scooter? The answer depends on the user’s weight as well as the kind of terrain the scooter is operated upon. However, manufacturers try to take an average of these factors so you can get an idea. Afiscooter is pretty honest in the figure they give, unlike other manufacturers who exaggerate and bloat their figures. On this scooter, you also have the voice of standard range batteries or upgraded range batteries. For an Afiscooter S3 with standard range batteries, the batteries last: 28 miles. For an Afiscooter S3 with upgrade range batteries, the batteries last: 37 miles. The lifetime of your Afiscooter S3 batteries is approximately 2 years, but very much depends on how much you use your scooter and whether you take good care of your batteries. The cost of replacing a set of Afiscooter S3 batteries is approximately $300 for standard range and $400 for longer range. Note: It doesn’t matter which batteries you initially bought your scooter with, you can change to upgrade/standard whenever you want.

What kind of batteries are used in the Afiscooter S3?

This mobility scooter generally uses gel-cell Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries by MK Battery. These batteries are maintenance free, meaning you don’t need to add water to them or anything like that. They happily stay under their shroud for the duration of their lifetime and you shouldn’t need to do anything to them at all. MK Battery is the leading, and most expensive brand in the industry and we’re proud to have their batteries in this scooter. Gel-cell is an excellent battery technology for a heavy duty application like powering the S3. Gel-cell is a superior technology when compared to Absorbant Glass Matt (AGM) batteries, and has advantages over lithium-ion batteries too. Lithium-ion batteries are not used, primarily due to cost. With batteries expiring after 2-3 years, the cost of replacing lithium batteries for a machine this size would run into several thousand dollars, vs. gel-cell which is more around the $500 mark.

Will the Afiscooter S3 seat fit me?

The Afiscooter S comes in 3 single-seat widths - 20”, 22” or 24” - and one double-seat width at 33”. Most people go for the standard 20” seat. If you weigh above 250 lbs, you might be better off on a 22” seat, and if you’re above 350 lbs, the 24” seat. The seat has sliders to move you closer or further away from the controls, so whether you’re a short or tall person, you’ll feel just right.

I’m a tall person. Will there be enough legroom for me in the Afiscooter S3?

The distance from seat to tiller on the S3 is above average when compared with other scooters of this type. Especially when the seat is slid right back to its furthest position this is probably the best mobility scooter legroom-wise. You can also ask to have the seat post set to the highest position so your long legs have more room. We are personally happy to recommend the S3 to anyone up to 6’4” tall. If you are taller than this, please call us to get further information 1-888-233-5563.

How much weight can the Afiscooter S carry?

The standard S3 can carry 500 lbs. You can get an optional upgrade which increases this max weight limit to 600 lbs.

What kind of ground clearance does the Afiscooter S have? Is it good for paths and trails?

The S3 has 5 inches of ground clearance. It also has a very powerful (for a mobility scooter) 1400W motor. It will do very well on grass, gravel and dirt paths. For extra all-terrain performance, consider the S3 All-terrain tire model.

How big is the Afiscooter S3? Will it indoors and how sharp does it turn?

The S3 is a large mobility scooter. It measures 61” by 27” and even larger if you add certain upgrades. If you choose a standard seat and tires, it will fit through most front doors, but is not intended for use around the house. You can drive it indoors to keep it safe and leave it close to the front door. As far as stores are concerned, you can use it in large stores such as Walmart and in malls, but it may not fit in smaller supermarkets. The S3 has a turning radius of 56”. Note, this is a measure of the diameter of the circle it creates when turning. For a 90 degree corner turn, cut this figure in half to 28”.

How to Purchase & What's Included

Why is the Afiscooter S3 so expensive?

We sell all our scooters at the minimum price (MAP) the manufacturer allows us to advertise for. If we advertise for cheaper, we could be prosecuted. This means we are cheaper or at the same price as all dealers complying with the rules. If you find another site selling for cheaper, we will price match, so long as they are within MAP. Scooters can be expensive because of the following reasons: Afikim / Afiscooter is a premium brand that has a strong focus on top-notch luxury and very quality components. The motors on these scooters are very powerful, they are really built to last, and the warranty policy is the best in the industry. In addition, the recent skyrocketing of shipping prices, coupled with rising inflation, have made these scooters significantly more expensive than they were, say one year ago. We do offer cheaper scooters by other brands, but if quality and comfort are your most important priorities, we highly recommend the Afiscooter brand.

Does Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Afiscooter S3?

Many heavy-duty/recreational mobility scooters do not qualify as medical devices under Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance strict rules. Though you might be disabled and using the device in a full medical sense, Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance seem to want to save as much money as they can, and do so by making the rules about which models qualify very strict. You might have spent significant time trying to find a Medicare/Medicaid provider online, to no avail. This is because it’s actually very hard for dealers to become Medicare providers, again making it hard for patients to get free scooters, again saving the insurance money. We don’t work with Medicare. We also do not bill private insurances directly. Some private insurances may reimburse you outside of Medicare’s framework. To check if your insurer does this, we recommend contacting them directly and asking. If they say yes, we’re happy to provide invoices/proof of purchases so you can get your money back from your insurer. Here’s a full disclaimer with regard to Medicare/Medicaid: Notice to Medicare/Medicaid Beneficiaries. Medicare will pay for medical equipment and supplies only if a supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have a Medicare supplier number. Medicare will not pay for any medical equipment and supplies we sell or rent to you. You will be personally and fully responsible for payment.

What happens after my order for the Afiscooter S3 is placed?

After your order for the S3 is placed, you will see a screen that looks like this one:
You will also receive an email confirmation, detailing the item you brought and the price you paid. The email will come from: support@heavydutymobility.com. Your email confirmation will contain instructions regarding delivery, please read these carefully. As soon as your item ships, we will send you an email containing a tracking link. Clicking on this link will allow you to track the shipping progress of your scooter. The vast majority of Afiscooter shipments are done through R&L carriers rlcarriers.com. If you chose standard, curbside delivery at checkout: The shipping company will call you to schedule a delivery appointment - you don’t have to take the first day available - you can delay receiving your scooter for a couple of days if that works better for you. We will also provide you with their number so you can call to preemptively arrange an appointment, or incase they fail to call you. The shipping company will call you usually within an hour of delivery, to let you prepare yourself at the curbside nearest to your home. The truck (very often an 18-wheeler) will deposit your scooter on the curbside, on a wooden crate. For more info on unpacking, see the question below “How does the S3 arrive, is any setup required?” If you choose White Glove Delivery at checkout: The scooter will be sent to a technician in your area for setup. Once they have set it up (usually 1-2 business days), they will give you a call to arrange delivery. You have paid for a premium service, so here you can really ask the tech to deliver at any time that suits you, delay for some time if you aren’t ready for delivery, etc. If in doubt, just call us at 1-888-233-5563. At the time of delivery appointment, the local technician will bring the scooter right into your house, wherever you want it. In most cases, the tech will be able to advise you on how to operate the scooter.

Shipping, Warranty & Returns

Shipping

How long from the time of order until I get my Afiscooter mobility scooter?

This very much depends on two factors: the stock status above and how far you are from Florida, where most Afiscooters ship out from. Bear in mind, different colors of the same model can have different stock statuses. Also bear in mind that if you add certain customizations, these can increase the time it takes for the team to assemble your scooter at the warehouse. The stock status for this scooter can be seen just under the product title at the top of the page.
  • This item can ship out as soon as the same business day the order is placed. Once shipped out, you can expect a transit time 4-5 business days. Please note these are indicative times and can vary based on how far you are from the supplier warehouse and the volume of orders being received. Also note that upgrades or extra accessory additions to your order may require extra time for installation.
  • If an Afiscooter is showing LEAD TIME with a number of weeks indicated, the estimated ship out time is that lead time plus standard ship out and transit time indicated in the paragraph above.

Please note, we have excellent relationships with our suppliers/manufacturers. If we are showing an item as having a lead time, it’s almost certainly the same for other dealers who might not have the most up-to-date information on the websites and may show the item as having a lead time.

  • If an Afiscooter is showing OUT OF STOCK above, please contact us for more details. You can call us at

Please note, we have excellent relationships with our suppliers/manufacturers. If we are showing an item as out of stock, it’s almost certainly the same for other dealers who might not have the most up-to-date information on the websites and may show the item as in stock.

Why are there such long lead times on some mobility scooters?

Covid has dealt a horrible blow to pretty much every industry on the planet. Right from mining materials to processing them to the factories that produce parts, shipping and freight companies - at every stage of the chain there are workforce shortages and severe delays.

My scooter is showing a long lead time above. Why should I buy a scooter now if in any case I won’t get it right away?

Unfortunately, the way things are nowadays, with delays across the entire supply chain, if you wait until there is no lead time on your scooter, you might end up waiting forever. As soon as new stock comes in, it is assigned to orders that were already placed, sometimes weeks in advance. We don’t know how soon the situation will get better - and it may actually get worse before getting better again. For this reason, customers are placing their orders as soon as they are able, to be placed on the list for as soon as the next scooters are ready to ship.

Where will my scooter ship from?

Afiscooters generally ship from the main warehouse at Daytona Beach, Florida. In some cases, orders for the West Coast are shipped from a warehouse in the vicinity.

Who will ship my mobility scooter?

Afiscooters are almost always shipped by R&L Carriers - a freight and trucking company. In most instances, your scooter is delivered by 18-wheeler, unless you choose white glove delivery.

How will my Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter arrive - is any setup required?

If you choose white glove delivery, your scooter will be 100% ready to ride. With standard delivery, the scooter is pretty much assembled ready to ride, including batteries which are preinstalled. You just need to go through a few simple steps.
  • Your scooter will be boxed in cardboard and fastened with the use of tie-downs. We advise you to come prepared with a sharp pair of scissors/knife.
  • You can simply cut the cardboard box open, cut the tie downs and roll your scooter off the crate.
  • Your scooter will be partially charged, enough to ride it into your home for charging.
  • Note the wheels might have some air let out for safety during transit. You should top them up to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer in the user’s manual.
  • The seat will be folded down. There will be a lever at the side of the seat allowing you to raise it.
  • The tiller may be folded down too. Simply move the tiller into position as per the manual instructions, allowing you to raise it to driving position.
  • There will be 2 sets of keys – one for the front compartment and the other to turn the scooter on. The keys may be located in the front glove compartment, under the scooter tied down to the crate or inside the rear lockbox.
  • The rear lockbox does not come assembled on the scooter but is very easily attached by the use of 4 screws (supplied).
  • Mirrors may need to be screwed into the handlebars.

How do I book a delivery appointment slot for my Afiscooter mobility scooter?

The shipping company delivering your scooter will call you to arrange delivery. We will also give you their number so you can call them to preemptively arrange an appointment.

What if I miss my delivery appointment slot for my Afiscooter mobility scooter?

If you miss your delivery appointment, the shipping company will usually take your scooter back to their local terminal in your area and try to reschedule an appointment. There is usually no charge for one extra appointment. Please contact us to keep us in the loop if you do miss your appointment so we can ensure the scooter isn’t sent all the way back to the place of origin.

What if my order hasn’t arrived by the time it was supposed to?

Especially since Covid, which made the truck driver shortage issue even worse than it was, your shipment might be delayed. If this happens, please call us 1-888-233-5563, or the number of the shipping company we provide you with so you can get an update on your shipping status.

What happens if my order for an Afiscooter mobility scooter is damaged?

  • When your scooter arrives, do not sign any forms until you have opened the boxes and ascertained that everything is as it should be.
  • If the external boxes are damaged, make sure to note this next to your signature. Make sure to inspect the contents before signing.
  • If your scooter is damaged in a way that the entire scooter needs to be replaced, just refuse the entire delivery.
  • If your scooter is damaged in a way that a spare part needs to be sent out and installed (eg a broken mirror), accept the delivery, and list any damaged items next to your signature.
  • If you find damage after having signed for delivery without any damage notes, this can be really problematic as the shipping company may try to shift the blame onto you. This is why it’s important to check for damage, especially if the outside boxes are damaged.

What happens if my Afiscooter mobility scooter breaks down?

If your scooter malfunctions, please contact us.

Sometimes we are able to troubleshoot with you over the phone to fix the issue. In other cases, it’s a matter of shipping out a simple part, say if a knob needs replacing, under warranty conditions.

If necessary, we will send out a technician to your home to repair your scooter within 2 years of purchase, or longer if you purchased further warranty plans in the “Options & Upgrades” section on this page. This includes everything besides wear & tear (such as seat wear, flat tire etc.) and the batteries, which are covered for 1 year by their manufacturer.

Depending on your location, it might take a few days to locate a local technician, arrange an appointment etc. This warranty service is not intended as an emergency breakdown service. If you are stuck and need urgent help, call 911.

Please note, it’s really important we don’t send technicians out for nothing, so to be open with you from the start, we will let you know that if a technician comes out for a problem which isn’t under warranty or was a user error, you may be charged for this visit.

Do I call you or the manufacturer if my Afiscooter mobility scooter breaks down?

Contact us before contacting the manufacturer.

How long does the warranty on Afiscooter mobility scooters last for? What’s included/excluded from the warranty?

The in-home warranty on all Afiscooter mobility scooters is for 2 years from date of purchase.

This includes everything besides wear & tear (such as seat wear, flat tire etc.) and the batteries, which are covered for 1 year by their manufacturer.

You can also add one extra year of this service as an optional upgrade HERE.

What can I do after the warranty period? Can I get spare parts for Afiscooter mobility scooters? Who repairs these scooters and where?

After the warranty period, you are still welcome to contact us at any time.

Parts are available through us or the manufacturer, though you will be charged for these.

If you need someone to install parts or for other labor services post-warranty, the same local technicians that repair your scooter under warranty can do so at a charge post-warranty.

Technicians are available throughout the contiguous USA.

Contact us for help finding a tech, or for more details.

Returns

What if I don't like my scooter? Can I return or exchange it?

Yes, returns are possible. Please see our returns policy.

May the Afiscooter S3 be driven on the road?

Though we cannot guarantee for all states and localities, wherever we have put this question to the law enforcement of any particular area, we have always been told that since this mobility scooter is used by and designed for disabled people, it may be ridden on the road where situations call for it.

May the Afiscooter S3 be driven on pedestrian sidewalks?

Though we cannot guarantee for all states and localities, wherever we have put this question to the law enforcement of any particular area, we have always been told that since this mobility scooter is used by and designed for disabled people, it may be ridden on pedestrian sidewalk, as long as this is done within reason. This means riding at a safe speed where others are around and being considerate of the other users that share the sidewalk.

How can I avoid my Afiscooter S3 from being stolen?

Daily Operation & Transportation

Daily Operation

Is the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter easy to drive? How does acceleration work? How does braking work?

The Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter is super easy to drive and control.

Remember, this is a scooter which was designed from scratch for seniors and those with disabilities. It takes into account that you might have slower reaction times and has automatic braking whenever you let go of the throttle.

It also features half speed mode for confined areas or whilst you’re building up your driving skills and want to go a little slower.

There is an emergency handbrake lever in the unlikely event the auto braking doesn’t activate as it should.

Due to the safety automatic brakes which kick in every time you let go of the throttle, your driving might seem a little jerky at first, but most people catch on very quickly and learn to use the throttle and brakes in a way that gives a smooth ride.

Acceleration/reverse is achieved by a lever in the handlebars, and braking is automatic when you let go of the brakes.

Most people find it easier to use their hand, so the standard Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter throttle is activated by a lever in the handlebars. For those who prefer foot pedal acceleration, this is available as an upgrade.

I only have use of my left hand. Can the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter work for left handed users? Can the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter be operated with one hand?

This scooter’s throttle/accelerator lever can be placed either on the right or left side. Please ask us for this modification before ordering.

With a scooter that has automatic braking which kicks in as soon as you let go of the throttle, you only need one hand to activate the accelerator, drive and stop.

It is also possible to steer the scooter with the same hand you’re using for the throttle lever, though this is a slightly harder way to drive.

Can I ride the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter in the rain, snow, wind and hot sun?

  • Rain: It’s OK and safe if you get caught in the rain once in a while, or go through an occasional puddle, but you should try to avoid a trip if you know it’s going to rain.
  • Snow and ice: We cannot take responsibility for using the scooter in these kinds of weather conditions.
  • Cold weather: Fine, though it does negatively impact the battery health and lifetime.
  • Wind: Generally not an issue unless very strong winds that could tip the scooter over. If you have a mobility scooter with a canopy, remember, very strong winds can act as a sail to tip over your scooter.
  • Hot sun: No issue as far as the scooter is concerned. Remember to take along ample hydration!

Do the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter batteries need maintenance?

This mobility scooter uses maintenance-free batteries which do not need any care until they die, after around 2 years of use.

How often should my Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter be inspected?

It’s a good idea to have your scooter checked once a year by a qualified technician.

Call us 1-888-233-5563 to get details on a local technician in your area.

You should also call us or a local tech if you hear strange noises coming out of your scooter.

How many years can I expect the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter to last me?

Since Afikim/Afiscooter is such a good quality brand, we say you can expect at least 10 years out of an S model. We wouldn’t be surprised if yours lasts 15 years or more.

This obviously depends on the way you take care of your scooter amongst other factors.

Will the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter fit in my car trunk/truck bed?

This scooter will not fit in the vast majority of car trunks. It will however fit on most pickup truck beds.

If you’re planning on transporting your mobility scooter on a pickup truck bed, you’ll probably need a ramp to get the scooter up onto the truck bed.

I don’t have a large enough vehicle to transport the Afiscooter S3 mobility scooter. What are my options?

  • Electric lift: The most common solution is to purchase a platform-style vehicle lift, which sits on your trailer hitch.

If you don’t have a trailer hitch on your vehicle, you’ll need to have one installed. The platform lowers right down to road level, you ride the scooter onto the platform, secure the scooter with provided straps and then activate a lift which raises the platform a few feet off the ground. You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.

  • Manual Platform: Like an electric lift, this has a platform which sits on your trailer hitch, but this platform does not rise and decened, instead, it has a built-in ramp which flips out, allowing you to roll the scooter up onto the platform.

You’ll need a vehicle that can take a max tongue weight of at least 500 lbs, so this won’t work for saloon and hatchback vehicles.

  • Scooter trailer: This is a full-fledged trailer on its own wheels, which attaches to your trailer hitch.

There is just one company that designs and produces a trailer specifically for mobility scooters, or you can just get any generic trailer whose specifications match the S4 in terms of weight and dimensions.
